Good Charlotte
Forum
Okaeey, on a serious note, Good Charlotte are a reasonable band to listen to, but not to love. There's a really good review of "Hold On" a few pages back, which just about sums up how good all of their songs are. It's okay to think "I like this music and I want to listen to it", but don't buy their stupid merchandise. That's taking it too far. If your daughter likes GC that's okay, as long as she doesn't get obsessed with them. Neurotic fans tend to go crazy and claim that they know everything about the band (and then get proved wrong by people who ask them questions) and say they're in love with Benji. It gets on people's nerves... Basically, GC are not a sincere band, but for some reason people take them seriously and then go crazy. Nobody likes an insane GC fan, except another insane GC fan. If you don't want your daughter to become an unpopular loser, it's best to stop her listening to GC when she starts to get addicted i.e. listening every day. I believe the homosexual thing is just a joke, unless Sk8a H8a is being more serious than he usually is. Is Benji REALLY gay? I don't care if he is, to be honest, but it'd be funny to see the reaction of the compulsive fans if he was. Just looking at what they have to say on this discussion about him being gay is amusing. Imagine female GC fans across the whole world screaming because their favourite punk wannabe wouldn't have sex with them! For that matter, imagine the reactions of the homosexual groupies...

I can only imagine, but don't really want to! She(9y/o) has a friend who is already into the obsessed category. She had to hang her GC poster up on my daughter's wall before she would come for a sleep over. She and my daughter and a couple of other "fans" think they are going to form their own band, and this girl wrote the lyrics to one of the songs that sent up red flags all over the place as a mom. That's why I asked :) Thanks for your opinion Flake

Oh dear... people who form their own bands and are not musically talented tend to be wasting their time. People who form their own bands and are inspired by Good Charlotte are insane. Really, they need therapy. I'd recommend introducing her to some decent bands. My suggestion would be Green Day, because they're alright. Or Rammstein, because unless you speak German, nobody understands what they're saying.

Oh, by the way... Benji is gay.
>>By Sk8a H8a (Thursday, 1 Apr 2004 18:57)
man... benji is not gay. i heard joel was but everyone knows he's got a chick. just rumors you dill hole.
>>By ladyvenom_619 (Thursday, 1 Apr 2004 19:38)
EVERYONE knows he's got a chick? Is he a hen farmer or something? I'd like to become one of those when I retire from the rock scene - I think Joel is giving in a bit too soon though. GC still have their greasy image to sell out on and cash in, yeah! Anyway, I'm not calling Benji gay because of rumours. What makes you think I listen to rumours about Good Charlotte? I ignore most rumours and Good Charlotte aren't considered cool enough to talk about where I come from. Can you believe it? I actually live in a nirvana where nobody is obsessed with this crappy band. Anyway, Benji is gay. I never said Joel was, although I know a gay guy called Joel, funnily enough. Do you reckon they're into twincest?

I did not mean to initiate the gay or straight talk once more. In fact I was enjoying the fact that there are some intelligent comments once in a blue moon on here :) I listen to Greenday, Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, and all sorts of other bands that she listens to with me as well. I Do Not listen to GC and was trying to discourage it in her because I felt it was not geared towards 9 year olds that seem to be obsessing over it. They have some talent, but need to wait until they have the voices they will end up with as to not sound so shrill and listen to me when I tell them that they cannot pick up a guitar and just play it. :)
>>By wannaBauthor (Thursday, 1 Apr 2004 22:53)
Haha, it is best to learn guitar by just picking it up and playing it though. That way, you have the enthusiasm to learn. I'm not so good myself, but I'm getting better because of my confidence. Teaching yourself is the best way and enthusiasm is the best thing about teaching yourself. About initiating the gay thing - you didn't, don't worry. I'm going to keep on about this until everyone believes me properly. Well, maybe not quite that long. By the time a certain number of people believe me, the rumour should be spreading itself without my help. People really do need to know that Benji is gay!
>>By Sk8a H8a (Friday, 2 Apr 2004 00:28)
I've not been here for a while and it seems like you still discuss if Benji is gay or not.. and if I remember right it was Sk8a H8a who kinda said I started the discussion and I'm tired of it and I want other things to talk about but it seems like we're stuck on this...
Me and my friends started to play together last fall but we didn't start because of GC, we started because we wanted to do something fun and the bands we where inspired of were bands like Green Day, Sugarcult and other good bands... I don't say GC is bad they just don't play the kind of music I wanna play... I'm more into alternative metal and that direction but now we're splited because I was tired of 'em... they tell me to shut up every time I open my mouth and I'm tired of it... and btw.. it was me who should sing...
>>By Mekko (Friday, 2 Apr 2004 14:21)
Sugarcult are almost as bad as GC! Oh well, at least they're straight.
>>By Sk8a H8a (Friday, 2 Apr 2004 17:50)
I think they're better... If I mention Smile Empty Soul... what are you saying 'bout 'em?
>>By Mekko (Friday, 2 Apr 2004 19:28)
good band probably not gay even so if they are none of our buisines so lets move on
>>By *Vovin* (Friday, 2 Apr 2004 20:57)
wohooo! finally someone said something good...
>>By Mekko (Saturday, 3 Apr 2004 09:25)
I've been thinking 'bout what Sk8a H8a said... that Benji is gay.. he wrote it 1 april and, atleast in sweden, it's the day when you're aloud do do practical jokes on everybody... I dunno but maybe he's just joking with ya...
>>By Mekko (Saturday, 3 Apr 2004 09:31)
I only said it twice on April Fool's Day, and those were both after midday, so the jokes don't count any more. It wasn't deliberate, believe me... I really mean it about Benji being gay. Rather than stating that we move on from this subject, perhaps you should suggest something else for us to talk about. They're not a good band, by the way. They are absolutely shockingly bad. Mekko: Smile Empty Soul? What's that all about? Is that a band or is it a song by Sugarcult of something?

My daughter had me sit down and listen to Motivation Proclaimation today. Fairly decent lyrics, very misguided melody! There are times in the song when the two voices hit such different pitches that it almost hurt my ears. I'll give them the fact that they may have been trying to get a message across or identify with the angry teenager demographic. Somebody remind me why they got a recording contract again? Sorry but I am having trouble with the fact that their lyrics seem to be geared toward teen agers who are prone to the mindset of the follower. Tell me if I am remotely wrong?
>>By wannaBauthor (Sunday, 4 Apr 2004 08:22)
ok... me, and so does my friends who are teenagers too, don't follow music they listen to, but listen music that is okey with their view of life... my favorite groups are HIM and Cradle Of Filth, and i worship Dani Filth and his lyrics, but it didn't change me, i just totaly love their songs cause i think the same way,and they write songs like they read my mind... hope your daughter is not so weak to follow something cause it seems cool
>>By iva212 (Sunday, 4 Apr 2004 15:47)
Sorry, you ARE remotely wrong. Their lyrics are rubbish, not fairly decent. Also you spelled "proclamation" incorrectly, but I'm guessing that was a typo. Apart from that you're 100% right. They got a record deal because these days, fake punk sells. And to quote you, "their lyrics seem to be geared toward teen agers who are prone to the mindset of the follower". Therefore, they will sell more. Record companies don't sign bands for their talent much any more. They're almost always in it for the money, rather than promoting good music. A mistake that is commonly made is that Good Charlotte's image got them their contract. That's not true; the contract got them their image. Someone said a while back that their record company probably paid for their tattoos. Damn right. Something else which adds to the popularity of the band is the controversy surrounding Benji's sexuality. People talk about this because nobody knows for certain whether he's gay or not, and if Good Charlotte are being talked about, even in a gay context, it makes them a hot deal.
>>By Sk8a H8a (Sunday, 4 Apr 2004 15:50)
He even looks gay on the cover of their first album. Sorry, but he does. Has anyone noticed how pop artists tend to have brighter album covers than serious rockers? GC's second album is not as bright as their first... Also they've started using that writing a bit more liberally. Is this a sign that their becoming better posers?
>>By Flake 1.6 (Sunday, 4 Apr 2004 19:05)
smile empty soul is an alternative metal band and they're awsome...
I heard that GC on their next album is going to sound more like nirvana... hope not...
>>By Mekko (Monday, 5 Apr 2004 12:26)
Hahaha like Nirvana! That's sooo unlikely. Good Charlotte may attempt to imitate Nirvana, but that's just what all pop-poser-punk bands do. Blink 182 are a prime example - try singing "All the Small Things" in a Kurt Cobain sort of voice or "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in a Tom Delonge sort of voice. See how stupid they sound. I do it from time to time to annoy Blink 182 fans. To Hell with Good Charlotte though. They're more gay than the average band.
>>By Sk8a H8a (Monday, 5 Apr 2004 16:11)
my head hurts can we talk about something else
>>By *Vovin* (Monday, 5 Apr 2004 18:26)
I think we can talk about something else...
Sk8a H8a... I can't help that it stood something like that in a magazine I bought... on the VMA last year he tried to sound a bit like Cobain and it actually sounded pretty good... I think so at least...
*Vovin*... why don't you come up with something?
>>By Mekko (Monday, 5 Apr 2004 20:08)
I'm trying my best to talk her out of following GC because her little buddies are so silly when they drool over Benji. It's really not a nice thing to see. As to the decent lyric comment, I was giving them the benefit of the doubt. I don't like to be too negative about much. Yes, it was a typo I am no perfect human (oxymoronic as that is) nor am I here to make enemies. Just wanted sincere comments on if the "music" was appropriate for her age group (9 y/o). Thanks to all who have answered.
>>By wannaBauthor (Monday, 5 Apr 2004 20:49)
You're welcome :) I know exactly what you mean about the drooling... Girls who feel that way about a guy 3 times as old as them disgust me. If this is what the media image of punks has created, I would rather punk had never happened. Good Charlotte are a disgrace. Of course we can talk about something else. *sound of wind blowing through the trees* Well, that was interesting! Let's discuss the issue of Benji being gay, shall we! Sorry if I seemed rude, talking about Nirvana. I'm going to sing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" later on as a mark of respect for Kurt Cobain.
>>By Sk8a H8a (Monday, 5 Apr 2004 23:09)
The girls drooling over guys much older than themselves doesn't disgust me, It scares me! Lots of those "guys" will take advantage of that in a NY minute. They want to wear makup now and dye their hair diff. colours(the girls not the guys:) I remember going through my black lipstick, white face, I hate you for being human phase at 14 or so. This 9 y/o facination with a "punk" group(use the term loosely as I am thinking Sex Pistols as Being punk and GC as Looking punk) is a bit much. No, I don't care what their sexual preference is. i don't care what anyone's sexual preference is unless I am either dating or married to them!
>>By wannaBauthor (Wednesday, 7 Apr 2004 03:25)
That would make sense. I thought the term was "New York second". How long is an NY minute? 60 NY seconds? The thing about these guys taking advantage is that they still have older groupies (14 y/o or so) and since they're not actually paedophiles... Uh, yeah, I hope you get my drift. The important thing about Benji being gay is that he probably won't take advantage of any little girls. Little boys, on the other hand...
>>By Sk8a H8a (Wednesday, 7 Apr 2004 10:58)
I totally agree with you that it's not very nice to know somebody (or being somebody) that drool about a 3 times older guy/girl... I personally like Billy.. it's not the way he looks or anything, I just like that type of guy... my boyfriend is kinda like a copy of him... the biggest difference is that my boy is much taller and blond...
Billy seems to be the nicest *wrong spelling I guess* of the bandmembers and he also seems to be the only one who has both foots on the ground...
I was reading through some documents I've got on the computer and I found one where it stood something about April fools day is the bands annivarcary *I know... wrong spelling again* and if that's true... than it's pretty funny... they're a joke =P
>>By Mekko (Wednesday, 7 Apr 2004 12:29)
I think April Fools' Day should be called March Fools' Day and it should be on February 29th because those jokes can get really annoying... Having more than one foot on the ground is a serious personality problem. At the moment, neither of my feet are touching the floor. If you have both feet on the ground, you're seriously restricting yourself. What songs were written by Billy, may I ask? I think Benji gets a more interesting angle on writing the lyrics, because... well you know why.
>>By Sk8a H8a (Wednesday, 7 Apr 2004 17:13)
he was with on Motivation Proclamation and some other... I dunno wich...
he's the one who wrote the songs in the band he played in before... he's one of those who's been writing the songs to tHrOnE....
that's all I know... and it's maybe too much =/
