I bought the box set its quite good anyone else have an opinion on the set?

>>By MetalBladeRecords   (Tuesday, 8 Feb 2005 18:30)

That's ridiculous though - Nirvana were immensely popular and famous before Kurt killed himself. And it's not as though there was any likelihood of him living in the mountains or anything of the kind... he was destined to die.

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Tuesday, 8 Feb 2005 20:04)

What we were saying is that, although they were immensely popular *when he was alive* they would have gone down and down in popularity the longer he went on. If Eddie Vedder had killed himself after Ten everyone would hail him as a hero of rock music. But he's still alive, still making music, just not well-known anymore.

Right now in the present, and in reality (the reality being Cobain is dead) Nirvana are only so well-known and respected *because* he killed himself.

>>By Flagg   (Tuesday, 8 Feb 2005 20:26)

I don't think that is true, Flagg.

>>By Bob from Apollo   (Tuesday, 8 Feb 2005 21:34)

I don't think so either. Look at AC/DC, I don't particularly like them, but they've been around a long time and they've been world famous for about 20 years. No one's killed himself and they're still very famous.

>>By Urbane   (Tuesday, 8 Feb 2005 23:58)

AC/DC may not be the best analogy, Urbane. Bon Scott, one could argue, did kill himself, with drink. But maybe the analogy holds in the sense that you could then split AC/DC into critical favorites with Bon Scott and popular favorites after him. Maybe this is what Flagg meant with popularity?

>>By Bob from Apollo   (Wednesday, 9 Feb 2005 01:13)

What I meant was no band that came after Nirvana is as popular as them. Millions of other post-Nirvana bands are popular and still going. But if you ask someone who listens to kiss fm to name a rock band, surely they're far more likely to say Nirvana than they are to say Pearl Jam. What's the only thing that makes Nirvana so different? Really? Apart from being the first ones to make that kind of music? Kurt Cobain's claim to fame, sadly, is that he commit suicide.

>>By Flagg   (Wednesday, 9 Feb 2005 11:46)

I like Pearl Jam. But Pearl Jam are posers compared to Nirvana. It's more a question of artistic authenticity to me.

>>By Bob from Apollo   (Wednesday, 9 Feb 2005 14:39)

Posers? Pearl Jam are the better band in my opinion.

>>By Flagg   (Wednesday, 9 Feb 2005 18:44)

I think it's the originality and Kurt's notable lifestyle rather than his dramatic suicide. Pearl Jam generally shunned fame, so how can they be expected to be more famous than Nirvana? Kurt was always desperate for fame.

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Wednesday, 9 Feb 2005 20:50)

Kurt Cobain wasn't desperate for fame! He hated being famous, that's about half his reason for killing himself.

>>By Flagg   (Wednesday, 9 Feb 2005 23:07)

But then you hear about him complaining to MTV-actually talking to them-that his music videos weren't payed enough... Sounds like one side of him wanted to be famous, and the other side hated it... I strange individual

>>By Urbane   (Wednesday, 9 Feb 2005 23:14)

The reason Nirvana is so popular is because of the music if Kurt had been alive today Nirvana would be just as popular all the truly great bands dont fade away there still around people still listen to their music

>>By MetalBladeRecords   (Thursday, 10 Feb 2005 02:03)

But there's a difference between having a massive fan base, as Pearl Jam still do, and having literally *everyone* who reads papers/magazines or watches tv, know who you are, as Nirvana had then. and in my opinion there have been plenty of better bands since.

>>By Flagg   (Thursday, 10 Feb 2005 20:00)

There have been no better bands since Nirvana had a presence which no other band could touch Nirvana was the type of band you hear once and instantly like everything about them there are not any bands today that can do that

>>By MetalBladeRecords   (Thursday, 10 Feb 2005 21:51)

Let's try a hypothetical situation where Kurt Cobain doesn't have his stomach problems/heroin addiction but still has the same talent at writing/performing songs and isn't about to run out of inspiration any time soon... so Nirvana continue to release albums and market them in the same way, touring as incessantly as ever. What's to stop them being as famous as they are now, with even more unforgettable famous tunes?
Kurt was always pushing his fame - when he was a kid, he told all his friends how he intended to be a famous rock star and he was like that ever since.

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Friday, 11 Feb 2005 00:01)

wow that was great sk8 almost brings a tear to my eye

>>By MetalBladeRecords   (Sunday, 13 Feb 2005 16:47)

Sk8a H8a this is what I was saying about Pearl Jam. What you just described is *exactly* what Pearl Jam have done, and look: they're nowhere near as famous as they once were. Really, I think Nirvana are over-rated, and their music wasn't special enough to justify the success they have now. But that's just my opinion. Kurt Cobain was not god, no one worshipped him when he was alive, he was just the current big thing. Now he's dead, he's been elevated to a ridiculously high status. I'm sure it's not what he would've wanted, judging from everything I've ever read about/by him.

>>By Flagg   (Sunday, 13 Feb 2005 18:21)

But Pearl Jam shun fame and popularity, whereas Kurt Cobain was always using new ploys to push Nirvana's success.

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Sunday, 13 Feb 2005 18:26)

Well, not judging from everything I've ever read about/by him. That's pretty cynical.

>>By Flagg   (Sunday, 13 Feb 2005 20:39)

Oh, I was just taking that from reading Heavier than Heaven, which is an excellent book. Meh, this conversation would go better in the "Kurt Cobain" discussion rather than the one for Nirvana...

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Monday, 14 Feb 2005 12:04)

i think this discussion would be best here considering that kurt was nirvana

>>By MetalBladeRecords   (Monday, 14 Feb 2005 19:19)

Hmm... if Kurt had not died, then Nirvana would have split up. Its that simple, really. Kurt was a very fickle person... he loved his dad, then he hated him and loved his mum...he adored Grohl, then talked about sacking him soon after his Nevermind came out. His best friend for over ten years, Krist, he wasn't even invited to the wedding because his girlfriend/wife didn't get on with Courtney. So he fell out with him and didn't talk to him for 2 months. So he fell out with his bandmates, and basically everyone he met...

>>By Tchock   (Monday, 14 Feb 2005 22:51)

And so Tchock summarises the second half of Heavier than Heaven eh? Heh, you're right - but how would that have affected Nirvana's fame? And how long would they have lasted?

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Tuesday, 15 Feb 2005 17:03)

My friend said that Nirvana was one of those bands that is only so popular today because the lead person died...is it true? would they be as popular if kurt never died?

>>By Jane   (Monday, 7 Mar 2005 04:45)

See? I think that's exactly right Jane. They were good, but their music didn't seem to change much over time. They kept on soing the same stuff, and people would've got bored.

>>By Flagg   (Monday, 7 Mar 2005 19:32)

Aye, I find a lot of the stuff on Nevermind in particular to be annoyingly similar...

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Monday, 7 Mar 2005 21:53)

oh ok..lol I think nirvana is pretty good though. I'm not like a die hard fan or anything but I like some of there tunes.

>>By Jane   (Tuesday, 8 Mar 2005 05:00)

Nirvana OWNS. The more I listen to their music, the more I love it. They were just as famous when Kurt was alive. Only now, he's a legend. And well-deservedly so.

>>By Cult Icon   (Monday, 28 Mar 2005 16:53)

couldnt have said it better Nirvana are the Gods of music
