Favorite albums "Meddle", and "UmmaGumma". I enjoyed the old Syd stuff too. The last few albums weren't quite as good, but nowhere near as bad as some purists would tell you. It's true what they said about the members not being into drugs, except for Syd. At least this is what they claim in interviews! For the most part their shows do not allow for much improvising, and so the concerts demand precision - precision that being "smashed" doesn't allow for. ( Don't get me wrong - I enjoy a good buzz. ) The exception to avoiding improv is the song "Any Colour You Like" which was created as a vehicle to jam on. On the '74 tour they really rocked out on it, playing it different each time. I'd be interested in which bands/songs that people think convey comparable feelings. I ask about "space rock" and people mention bands like Hawkwind, who are great, but don't sound anything like Floyd. There is a new band called "The Warlocks" that I like, who sound like a combination of Floyd and The Velvet Underground, believe it or not. They are on tour right now. They are young people, too, for all of you that missed my era, and don't like listening to stuff by people who are older now. Listen to songs like "Whips of Mercy" and "Cosmic Letdown" and you will feel once again transported back to the days of the Robot/Screaming Abdabs. ( I know the song titles look like Heavy Metal thrash titles, but they're not. ) "Whips of Mercy" sounds like a tune played by the house band in a ghost town saloon. Electric spaghetti western theme. Some of the early albums by Porcupine Tree were Floydian too. I don't know which tribute bands are best. Any thoughts? The Australian band is the one with the best known "big" show. Any ladies in Chicago that care to . . um . . talk about Floyd some more? :^D

Brain Damage and Money are my favorite. For those of you who think Pink Floyd is anything but the best, the world will be a better place without you. Pink Floyd is much better than most bands today, especially the ones shallow and horny teens tend to be addicted to...

Pink Floyd rocks my socks off, they really do. My uncle died like 8 years ago, and I found some of his old Pink Floyd cd's, and I started listening to them. Dark side of the moon is incredible, just tonight I was sitting in my house in front of the stereo, playing dark side of the moon and reading the lyrics from the book, for a good 2 hours, and doing nothing else.
I might get a dark side of the moon hoody, I saw it online and thought I must get it..maybe for Christmas!

Yes this band is excellent and all those people who say they're pretentious and/or overrated are just wrong.

Radiohead are the Pink Floyd of our generation apparently. I agree.

>>By Flagg   (Wednesday, 8 Dec 2004 21:33)

Personally, I think Porcupine Tree are the Pink Floyd of our generation.

>>By Obfuscated   (Thursday, 23 Dec 2004 16:20)

i hate when people say that some band is a classic band of our generation, nothing now can compare to any classic music

>>By RaNcId_StAr   (Thursday, 6 Jan 2005 22:40)

you can't call a band the pink floyd of a generation...thats just silly
musically and creatively i think the two bands are very very similar and were definitely in the same place....also in the way the two bands have progressed....radiohead with their earlier rawer sounding stuff....pink floyds early music wasn't necessarily rawer than their later recordings but you can feel the difference in the sound and production of the music

favourite album is obscurred by clouds but i've never heard anyone ever mention it...from beginning to end its f-cking fantastic...The Gold It's In The... is about as straight forward rock and roll as pink floyd ever got and that song always makes me think..talking about a journey into the hills but it just illustrates the difference between the two kinds of people in the world...the people that set their minds on their goals and hte people that just worry about the journey.....anyways...great album Obscurred by Clouds

>i hate when people say that some band is a classic band of our generation, nothing now can compare to any classic music

That's pretty pessimistic. There is still great music being made, you just have to look a bit harder.

has anyone ever wanted to take lsd and then watch the wall....i want to but MY GOD, IT WOULD BE FECKIN TERRIFYING

>>By pinkfluffybrickmeister   (Wednesday, 12 Jan 2005 13:50)

i actually never saw the wall but i'm planning to soon..
it's pretty hard to find good music these days still

>>By RaNcId_StAr   (Sunday, 30 Jan 2005 22:45)

i grew up listening to the floyd...my step dad is the worlds biggest floyd fan...even though i dont personally listen to floyd it did influence my taste in sound. they were the instigators of techno.

if you find that floyd is too dated for you why not try:
Easy All Stars - Dub side of the moon
this rocks it is a funked up wicked version of dark side of the moon
if you like regae, funk, dub and drum'n'bass this is for you.

>>By Artemesia_9000   (Monday, 31 Jan 2005 07:59)

It sounds like a bastardisation of a classic to me.

>>By Obfuscated   (Monday, 31 Jan 2005 11:46)

i watched the wall!! haha it was so great!

>>By RaNcId_StAr   (Wednesday, 2 Feb 2005 21:38)

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Thursday, 17 Mar 2005 16:37)

I recently bought "Echoes - the Best of Pink Floyd". It really is brilliant.

>>By Obfuscated   (Tuesday, 22 Mar 2005 14:32)

Wish You Were here is one of my favourite albums of all time, simply because of the epic, the magnificent, the unsurpassable Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 1-9) Possibly the greatest piece of music composed by a rock band. The Wall is a pretty good album as well.

>>By masterofinsanity   (Monday, 25 Apr 2005 12:59)

Did you all watch Pink Floyd yesterday on live 8? they were nothing short of incredible! to be broken up and then come together after 20 years that's really awesome. and yes masterofinsanity, Shine on you crazy diamond is such a beautiful song! dark side of the moon and wish you were are my favourite albums. It's weird, i've never liked the wall like crazy, I think it's because I saw the movie first before I really listened to the album and I guess it doesn't mean much because they wrote the songs for the movie.

Does anyone here have the cd umma gumma? if you do what do you think about it? I personally think it's really dissapointing and just a bunch of noise. Apparantly it was because the band members were just doing their own things.

Bike is a hilarious song!!

>>By Jane   (Monday, 4 Jul 2005 05:15)

Well... the Floyd hasn't really been broken up "for 20 years"; only Roger Waters had left the band in 1981. After that the band still existed (allthough Richard Wright left for a few years as well, which put the band 'on hold' for a while) and the three remaining members continued to write music and perform live. The past few years they were sort of dead indeed, but what made this reunion really special was the return of Roger, who always was the main creative force behind the band, and not literally the fact that "Pink Floyd reunited after 24 years".

>>By Hexegot   (Thursday, 14 Jul 2005 10:57)

*short addition*

~ I said Roger Waters left in 1981; this should be 1983.
~ The Floyd did break up, in contrast to what I said, but after only a few years they reformed again.

(Sorry to misinform you people.)

>>By Hexegot   (Thursday, 14 Jul 2005 11:08)

Woah; I really like Umma Gumma, especially Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
