AS vs RATM
-----
Audioslave is not the new RATM. But it's interesting how Tom, Brad, and Tim decided to go with the new style (i.e. 'the message') of Audioslave just like that. It could mean that either 1) they weren't that political in the first place, or 2) people change; they've changed, they're probably over their rebellious phase now (I read somewhere Brad was apolitical in the first place).

The Singer makes the band
-----
After observing this, I have decided that with both Audioslave and RATM the singer made the band. The singer writes all the songs and is like the leader of the group. Both Zack and Chris set the melody, rhythm and lyrical content.

Reasons for liking RATM
-----
Whoever said 90% of people like RATM don't care about their politics I'm not sure about that; I think you're not giving enough RATM fans credit for having a brain to think. It's unprovable anyway. But I do see two levels of fandom that exist. Fans liked RATM for either their politics or their music.

My reasons for liking RATM
-----
Sometimes you get a band with great lyrics/vocals but a poor sound. Sometimes you get a band with poor lyrics/vocals and a good sound. Rarely do you get both in unison. For me personally RATM were that. Because of this I don't mind if fans loved them for their politics or their music. Both were great but the political aspect was paramount for me liking them. You could have politics without the music but not music without the politics (i.e. Zack).

On Revolution
-----
To like RATM you don't have to start a revolution. I think Zack's main intention was for people to be socially and politically aware of the truth behind what goes on in the States, and also to rap about the plight of Mexicans (his Hispanic roots). He wants us to be passionate about what we believe should be right. Sometimes anger is needed to ignite this passion and to seek change. Change doesn't mean you have to overthrow the government by force. Although this is implied through their angry vibe, you can do it for example by voting the government out.

On Zack
-----
He is like no other. I never liked rap before him - but that's because in the past the only rappers were ones that loved money, women, wore gold chains, sang about #1 (themself) and you couldn't hear what they were singing about because their voice was too low (not having a go at African-Americans but it's just a fact for me).
Zack uses the word fuck and shit a lot but he doesn't throw it around aimlessly like Fred Durst (I like a lot of Bizkit's stuff though). You could almost say he has managed to make the use of the word 'fuck' eloquent.
I don't think the stuff he sang about was ever fake, to make money or whatever. If this was the case he did a very very consistent job because there are no flaws or inconsistencies. Of course it's very hard to be anti-capitalist and live in America without being hypocritical (you could not wear Nike, you could not eat at McDonalds for example.. but you might subconsciously slip up one day [I had no idea this fabric was made by slave labour in China!]). However I belief Zack is/was the most consistent person out there. Not many people can speak the things he speaks and live up to what he says (practices what he preaches).

Putative inconsistency of ideology
-----
I believe RATM *used* whatever record label (be it Capitol or Communist) as a tool to speak out to the masses. When you live in a country (society) like the USA, the only way to get a voice (so to speak) through music is by pressing your stuff to CD. He (sorry if I speak as if Zack was the band) *could* have used a more "underground" label but it's a fact that big labels have bigger distribution. Same thing with MTV. People watch TV. RATM communicated their message via TV. I think this was their justification. As for the pedantism regarding the jewel case, is this the only evidence one can come up with RATM's inconsistencies? I don't believe anyone's ever caught them plunging their profits from CD's into the sharemarket or something a bit more revealing than a jewel case example that belongs in UK Gossip magazines (Exclusive! RATM CD cases made in sweat shops!). The actual production of their CD is out of their hands. You have to give certain weight to what's important and what's not. Jewel cases are not.

On the Content
-----
I don't think people had to go and do research on what Zack sang about because he sang (rapped) it clearly, succinctly and cleverly.

Sampling Vs Effects
-----
I don't believe RATM ever said they never used effects (pedals and such). They said (at least in their first self-titled album) that no sampling was using in the recording of the album.

So what is a sample? A sample is
'A usually digitized audio segment taken from an original recording and inserted, often repetitively, in a new recording.'

With this definition, RATM did not using any sampling in their album(s).

If one thinks that using a wah-wah is an effect and thus "not real music" than one could have a similar argument and say that what electric guitars produce are "not real music" because originally guitars were not run on electricity.

Why is it considered great by some that RATM don't use sampling? A personal philosophy is that 'from rigidty comes creativity.' Making wierd noises with a guitar is a skill. Anyone can make a wierd sounding noise on a computer, but few can do it with a guitar. Therefore one has an appreciation of what Tom *can* do and what very people can't; or even if those people can do what Tom did, Tom had the originality of mind to invent it. I remember Tom was interviewed about this topic; he said something along the lines that he likes limiting his variables. Limiting your variables and producing the same interesting sound is the height of elegance (Combining simplicity, power, and a certain ineffable grace of design).

That is why I applaud their no sampling stance.

Rage Against The Machine is amazing, I have been listening to them forever. That shit pumped me up and is like no other band. Zak put mad energy into the band and Tom is like the best guitarist ever (he wins so many guitarist awards). They better reunite because this is bullshit, them breaking up and having cornell take over. Audioslave is ok, but zak and RATM destroy their ass so bad its unbelievable. Their political Rage and rebellion is so tightt. I'll be pissed if they dont come back and destroy all other bands like they should.

wat better place then here, wat better time than now<

Not only is it possible to like a band's music w/o being concerned with their political views, it is possible to like a band's music while despising their political views.

For example,
I think rage peddles a bunch of hippie-commi-liberal-propoganda bullshit. I also think Mumia Abu-Jamal is guiltier than O.J. and he deserves to rot in his cell until they execute him.

However, that doesn't stop me from blasting rage on my stereo and enjoying it.

I think you people are too obsessed with the policitcal message of rage. Regarding drummer Brad Wilk: "He is in the band for the music, and is not especially politically inclined. He admits that Rage is a political band, and that opening people's eyes is a great thing, but that sometimes 'People want to be rocked... and we will rock you'"

So far i haven't seen anyone state the underlying political message of rage against the machine, that is the reconquest of old mexican territory by way of marxist race war. i think this clears at least some of the problems dresden had with the band. i agree, most people who listen to the band are dumb ass, they see the problem rage sings about but not the solution. so, most of them go on sites like this and talk about how fucked up the corporate structure of this country is but they don't talk about race or even class war, more over they don't do anything towards such goals. but the reason rage is so dangerous is because they reach the mexican youth the strongest of all. and they are ready and willing to carry out race war. they are bitter and filled with hate, there is a substantial number of them already gathering arms and training for urban guerilla war all they need is a spart to let loose their fury. if you don't believe me look up the reconquista or atzlan or la raza or mexica. you can see it in rage songs like people of the sun "the city of angels does the ethnic cleanse" and maria "these are her mountains and skies and she radiates, through history's rivers of blood she regenerates, and just like the sun disappears only to reappear, she is eternally here, her time is near, never conquered by here"

>>By razumihin   (Thursday, 25 Mar 2004 19:58)

correction on the last quote its "never conquered *but* here"

WHY do you come to come to every discussion and tlak about something completely off-topic? As if it's not bad enough that you're tlaking about me behind my back. Shame upon you. And shame upon the fans of Rage Against the Machine. I pity you fools... They're a lot worse than Korn, which is something I wouldn't normally say. I don't like Audioslave either, but they're a lot better than this. Bands like RATM should be put in prison.

don't know what i just walked into with the attacks on rage fans but does anyone know if rage is actually going on a reunion tour. a friend of mine told me his mom heard something on the radio but thats all he's heard as well. i saw someone mentioned a reunion tour a few posts back but was that just wishful thinking? is my friend's mom just deaf and didn't hear crucial parts of what was said on the radio ("i wish RATM would ANNOUNCE THEIR REUNION TOUR")? i mean, i find it surprising that zach or tom would want to rekindle the rage political fire, but these next 6 months are going to be crazy so maybe they would. any help on clearing this up would be greatly appreciated.

rage rules the idea of them doing a reuinion tour would be awsome having never seen them live it would be a great show

unpopular third parties almost never get elected so it would probably be a waste of time to vote for a third party i suggest kerry because bush is a waste of a vote
