Discovering Atmosphere has definetely changed my life, Slug is one of the best rappers around. Not because he puts on this act of being touch and talking about violence, not because he counts up all the bitches he's done in the back of his jeep, but because he talks about real shit, things everyone go through in a unique way. "Prides paranoia" is the best, my favourite line is the end when he says

And when I can, I'm gonna build a castle that touches the clouds
Not to get closer to God, but to get further from y'all

now THAT'S hip hop.

I just saw atmosphere in october, in madison,WI. atmosphere is the best thing i've ever heard. slug's rhymes can connect to my life, or anyone's for that matter, in so many ways. atmosphere stands above and beyond any mainstream bullshit. i love you slug.

Heres a lil' rhyme i wrote:

Your ass is smokin' shwaggy shit
Actually it's laced with laxatives
Get baked until you have to shit
Pray you don't have an accident

Peace, Chad

slug is the emotional heartcore of hiphop. similar to sage francis in subject matter, but with a voice and rhyme style more similar to the "average joe", slug is the wisdom of the underloved and overrejected, starved for affection and (in his own words) an aspiring sociopath(ic alcoholic).

what is everyones favourite track of the new album?

mine's a tossup between
-"always coming back home to you" (such a beautiful story and a beautiful beat... imagine the child with the gun... )
and
-"trying to find a balance" (the moment when that beat first kicks in makes me shaky.... its beautiful.)

just an interesting sidenote: the guitar on those two tracks was actually recorded by a musician specifically for the album, not sampled or synthesised... most of you probably knew that anywayz, but i thought it was a good indicator of how hiphop is becoming more and more creative, not only with the lyrics but with the music. hopefully it will stopped being dismissed as "simply stealing other peoples music" and finally get respect from non-hiphopheads as a legitimate artform (pffft.. one day =P).

thank you for your time.
agree with me.

No matter what type of music someone listens to, if you play any atmosphere song...they'll either be extremely in to it, or at least fully respect it. There's only a very few amount of bands or artists that can do that. Atmosphere epitomizes lyrical talent regardless of what some may say, i say 'as long as that's enough to keep your ass from comming back'.

look unless its underground hip hop nowadays its more than likely garbage..you get this repetitive bullshit with someone yellin about how much money they got or how big they're fuckin rims are....atmosphere opened my eyes to a new kind of hip hop and he can open anyones just listen to the words of his songs....he's got bangin lyrics and off the hook beats...check out his new album sevens travels and the rest of the rhymesayers lab's shit....

in the days of kings and queens i was a jester
treat me like a god or they treat me like a leper
you see me move back and forth between both
i'm tryin to find a balance i'm tryin to build a balance

Astmosphere is so sick. i definantly agree that he is the heart of underground hip hop. He has the most awesome albums of all time. But Im a little bit disappointed that slug had some out with a music video. I thought slug was ahead of all that corporate bull, dont you all think so? Well listen to lifter puller or sevens travels. that's a dope sone. But Atmosphere is still so dope!

Atmosphere just signed to headline the biggest hip-hop/college festival in Minnesota (probably the upper midwest) ... Juliapalooza IV... www.juliapalooza.com. Nobody does it like Atmosphere, but if you're feeling Slug ~ you'll be blown away at the next Juliapalooza (May 7-8, 2004)

I've read every post here and I just wanted to tell a story about how I came to be an Atmos fan. It was the summer of 99 and me and a couple of homies went to a Rahzel concert for my guys birthday. We got there pretty early, which was pretty uncharacteristic of us at the time. There was a handful of people there, not too many tho. There was some token local DJ doin his thing, we were gettin our drink on cause this was also my buddies 21st birthday, the last of the crew to turn 21. Then the opening act came out. Another DJ and a white kid who was kickin some accapella rhymes while the DJ got set up. It might have been the alcohol or the weed on the way there, but I was stopped in my tracks for a second. This dude was rippin'. And the stage presence.....fuhgetaboutit. Then the DJ started cuttin shit up in the middle of the rhyme. The song he was kickin I later found out was Scapegoat off the first album, their only album out at the time. All these two guys had with them was 2 turntables, a mic, and an instrumental CD of Overcast. He went through most of the songs on the album, and halfway through the set I realized there was a bunch of kids who knew the words to like, all the songs. I was like "who are these guys with this nice little following?" Next thing I knew me and my boys are trippin out, gettin tipsy, in disbelief of what we were seein. At the end of the set Slug makes an announcement that they were seelin cd's over there at the table. Before he even finished the statement all three of us had a copy of the album and it hasn't come out the CD player in 5 years. Oh yea.....Rahzel was pretty good, too

Ah! I love Atmosphere!! I'm really not into hip-hop or rap, but my boyfriend turned me onto them and I've loved them ever since I heard "God's Bathroom Floor" and "Modern Man's Hustle". They have such an amazing sound and they actually have a message unlike most of the main stream rappers out there. I also find them quite romantic. "I said I'll make you smile for the simple fact I'm good at it, I'll make you smile just so I can sit and look at it."

I agree with what Grim Reefa said a couple of pages back. Most of these guys' fans don't know much hip-hop, they hear Atmosphere with their punk-rock sensibilities and Slug's simple, easy to follow rhyming structure, and so they like it. Slug is a pretty good MC, he's got more passion than most, but his flow and wordplay are basic.

I like Atmosphere, but they are viciously overrated. People can't say they're the best hip-hop group ever, that would be like saying The Matrix is the best movie ever. They're clearly good, and talented, but they're way inferior to a helluva lot of other artists. Check out Cannibal Ox, Cunninlynguists, Company Flow, Blackalicious and Mr. Lif for the real deal.

Stinkfist is right, I don't listen to hip-hop ... at all really. My boyfriend played a few of their songs for me and I liked them. Since then I've listened to some "real deal" bands as Stinkfist called them and they're pretty good as well, I still like Atmosphere's style, if you know what I mean. The Pharcyde also has an awesome "style".

I just really like Atmosphere. And what's weird is, I can't stand basically any other hip-hop.

I figured you all might enjoy reading this! Its another of my references to the December issue of Spin magazine!

^^ To make that work you've to remove the space between "http://" and "img484" ... it wouldn't let me post it as a whole word, it was too big! So enjoy!
