Wise, I have to disagree with you... John was not the greatest writer ever--especially since he hardly wrote anything alone. John may have been the mind of the Beatles, and Georgy the soul, Ringo the nose, but Paul McCartney was the Man, baby--he was the heart of the Beatles!!

>>By wren   (Saturday, 20 Sep 2003 05:42)

The beatles are good. I got nothing against them.

>>By Jane   (Saturday, 20 Sep 2003 17:59)

jesus people George Harrison is the best beatle...and one of the best guitarists in the history of rock...sure he doesn't go off on those flaming solos like Hendrix or Clapton but he added just what the song needed which is more valuable (in my opinion) I don't really listen to the beatles much... I listen mostly to punk but the Beatles are great and they in some way or another inspired a whole new generation of music for that I am greatful because they were a step on the ladder way back there and without them we might not have some of the great bands of today

>>By nosupremists   (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 20:58)

Paul McCartney is my hero. I love that guy.

>>By PuNkRaWkEr223   (Monday, 22 Sep 2003 03:50)

This band is highly overated.

>>By The Great Neutrino

Euhm? Who are you, and why do you think so.... I can do nothing with only a statement like this.......

>>By Campking   (Monday, 22 Sep 2003 13:38)

From the overrated statement I could say that this had something to do with the Beatles collapse. Being raised to a religion by John's unfortunate comment was indeed overrating the band.
They were of course a fabulous and inspirational band, and it is a pity their music is not more popular today. My personal favourite Beatle is Ringo, but that's just my biased opinion rearing its ugly head.

>>By Sk8er H8er   (Monday, 22 Sep 2003 20:09)

That's the point with Americans: they never understood, nor will understand Irony or cynism etc etc.. Mostly they took the comment of Lennon far to serious.....
Hopefully one day you will all learn some relativisation and see that Irony is beatiful......

>>By Campking   (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 12:53)

OMG I am getting rid of that poser name. Twice now I've screwed myself over with it....DAMMIT ALL TO HELL!
And rog', stop talking about how your opinion is biassed. All opinions are biased, because opinions are what a person thinks, not what a person knows. It's not just your opinion that's biased, mine is too. And so are all the other opinions of all the other people on the face of this Earth.

>>By punk_child_8713   (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 13:42)

Wow, that post was TOTALLY unrelated to The Beatles. Magic.
I always wondered why being unpopular in America affected them so badly. America doesn't rule the world or the music industry, whatever their people might like to think. British music is mostly better than American (in my biased opinion), and we don't lay claim to ruling music. The Beatles started out with no American fans at all, so why did they have to stop when the righteous mob who really believed that they were "more popular than Jesus" started hating them? It was good music, so why did they stop making it because of some ignorant haters? When you look at all of the haters of modern bands (on this site alone) having no effect whatsoever it doesn't seem to make sense.

>>By Sk8er H8er   (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 17:33)

i DON'T THINK AMERICANS BURNING THEIR ALBUMS IN HECTIC BIG STREET FIRES WAS THE MAIN REASON FOR THE bEATLES TO STOP... Sorry for the caps.. little mistake: I rather believe that they were ready with eachother after all these years.. and some of them had some musical disagreements and therfore wanted try on their own......
Maybe being hated helped, but that could have never been the main reason, for then I think they would have never went on with their solo projects, but have just hid out on their big mansions in England.....

>>By Campking   (Wednesday, 24 Sep 2003 07:42)

What the hell is everyone talking about? The Jesus comment happened YEARS before the Beatles finally broke up. They may have been hated by a few close-minded Americans but I don't think that lasted for very long. I don't don't think John Lennon was being Ironic at all. He said that that in America the Beatles were more popular than Jesus and he was probably right. I think he said it in part because he was baffled by all of the fame and hysteria that surrounded the band. It probably pissed people off so much because they knew he was right. The Beatles WERE NOT hated when they broke up. They broke up because they hated each other

>>By MightyAfroWhitey   (Wednesday, 24 Sep 2003 09:07)

Ack. I think the Euro's don't quite know what happened--first, there was no "hysteria" over John Lennon's statement... I will admit, some Protestants in Texas (which is WAY south, and does not qualify as the whole of America) burned their records, but the burning probably brought only more income to the Beatles as many of them just snuck out and bought more.

That's not to say that these Christians were "selling out" their faith after they had made such a bold statement, but only that they were caught up in some emotional decision and passion (can you respect passion?) and later regretted it... simply because the Beatles totally rock, and they missed them... I would. That's why I haven't broken my cds. Because I would miss them...

But my point is this group of passionate Christians does not represent America and doesn't even represent the Christian community in America.

Anyway, about that comment, we all know John Lennon was wacked--there's no denying it--how else could he pop out such greats as "Strawberry Fields," "Lucy...," and "The Ballad of John and Yoko"--to name only a few of his crazy ones.

I HAVE THEM ON VIDEO & I SEE WHY THEY ARE TRUE LEGENDS

>>By star   (Tuesday, 21 Oct 2003 01:16)

The statement John made about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus (which was true) was made in 1966. The album burning didn't last long and probably mainly took place in the bible belt where fundamentalists christian wackos rule everything. Their popularity didn't decline at all - this took place even before their Sgt Pepper album which was highly rated by musicians from all areas of music, not just rock.

I will always rate them as the best band ever. I was watching them on the Ed Sullivan Show in Feb 1964 when they made their US debut. There are people from every generation who like their music - from teenage to elderly.

>>By Etain   (Saturday, 25 Oct 2003 18:26)

7 times so far the beatles have been miss spelled, 5 times by people who thought the band rocked and 2 times by people who didnt like the beatles. but also Paul McCartney was a wanker.

>>By kit_carson   (Monday, 27 Oct 2003 03:02)

There is no over rating the Beatles! They were the BIG BANG ! If you want to see what happened to the Beatles, just look at all the bands they directly influenced such as: The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead, just to start naming the most well known. The BEATLES were so huge they blew apart and rock music as we know it today is STILL feeling it. You can't put down the Beatles without putting down what makes music good and setting yourself up to look like a fool.

>>By SulfurFury   (Thursday, 18 Dec 2003 19:29)

i think that the Beatles were more than just a band!! They spoke to the world through their lyrics... sure i think they had a lot of help, and it seems like towards the end, they realized how ignorant the people were to their music... people took them for some 'cool and amazing band' just jumping on the bad wagon of the fame, without really listening to there words.

'help'... i think that was a cry for help to the people, so that they could live regular lives... its sad to think that the majority forgot that they were people as well!! :(

John Lennon, spoke like a true prophet... yet, no one truely listens...

>>By the child   (Sunday, 21 Dec 2003 08:21)

i love the beatles...great music...

>>By lil_shorty452   (Tuesday, 24 Feb 2004 01:10)

Subjectively or objectively, the Beatles were the best. I'm still pissed at Mark Chapman.

>>By stooben   (Monday, 5 Apr 2004 15:07)

Sulfurfury, where do you get the information that Hendrix was influenced by The beatles? In my recollection of the Hendrix bio I always find names of people as Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, but no Beatles. You might be right though, but I never heard it anywhere before, but in the fact that Hendrix Played some beatles songs. (which ofcourse should be prove enough for the influence... euhm....)

>>By Campking   (Monday, 5 Apr 2004 15:25)

The Beatles were awesome........... I would have to say though that The Who are BETTER. You have to Love Keith Moon, he was the BEST drummer there ever was.

>>By RammsteinLiebe   (Friday, 9 Apr 2004 21:53)

I was born in sefton general hospital and grew up in 259 Menlove avenue Liverpool. 4 doors down from Mr Lennons old childhood home. he had moved (obviously) by the time I was old enough to speak but his neighbours remembered him well. normal kinda fella, they said....

they where 4 boys in the right band at the right time who wrote the right music for the right generation.

saying that.... they do truly rule

never been keen on Paul McCartney tho...

>>By theevilone   (Wednesday, 14 Apr 2004 04:26)

The Beatles are my favourite band, but sometimes I find myself asking why. Is it because of the music or is it nostalgia?

I grew up in the sixties and the Beatles were the first music group I ever noticed. Listening to the Beatles brings back childhood memories. Nostalgia is definitely part of their appeal for me. But it is more than that. The Beatles made good pop music that holds up. There's a reason people who weren't alive in the sixties are rediscovering it today.

Listening to my collection of Beatles CDs I'm struck by the variety of their music. There are fast paced songs like I saw her standing there and Back in the USSR. There are soft, gentle tunes like John Lennon's Julia - a personal favourite. There are elaborate pieces like A Day in the Life. For me one of the strongest features of the Beatles' songs are the lyrics. They're clever and original. Not to mention fun. I am the Walrus makes no sense to me, but the words alone are a pleasure to listen to.

Some people say the Beatles are overrated. I can understand that, because there is a lot of hype surrounding the band. But after you strip away the hype, you are still left with some of the best pop music ever.

>>By Mikey_Canuck   (Saturday, 24 Apr 2004 15:43)

Y'know, Mikey, I CAN'T understand when people say the Beatles were overrated. I mean, if writing over 100 distinguishable and enjoyably catchy pop/rock songs is just a minor feat, then how come no other band has been able to do so. If someone mentions Elvis, well, he was ok, but he only co-wrote a couple of songs.

As for the nostalgia thing, well I see how that could work for you. But I'm only 23. I was born a couple of months before Lennon was murdered. So, I basically missed the whole thing. But I gotta say, The Beatles music (even the bad songs, and yes, there are a few) is still better than 75% of the crap out there now.

Every single one of their albums, from "Please Please Me" to "Let It Be" (or "Abbey Road" which of course was their last recording), is a classic. What other band could completely transform their sound and create such a library of music in little over 7 years? Haven't found another one yet.

>>By The Walrus   (Monday, 26 Apr 2004 15:27)

Anyone who says The Beatles were overrated is saying it purely for the attention & shock value! Most people who say things like this have (a) only heard Twist & Shout, Love Me Do, etc, or (b) had glorious childhoods & hanker for negative attention in an effort strengthen their belief in their 'wild' character! If you've never heard them don't comment on them...you'd go off your tits if I said your latest T shirt band was cack! Apologies for the outburst but I have to agree with The Walrus on this one. How can you say that the band who did more for music than any other band to date is overrated? Get to school!

>>By Ben Hollywood   (Monday, 26 Apr 2004 16:18)

To The Walrus and Ben Hollywood:

Just in case it wasn't clear, I'm not the one saying the Beatles were overrated. I said I can understand why some *other people* think that way. The hype surrounding the band sometimes gets in the way of the music.

Nostalgia is *part* of their appeal for me, but that's not the whole story.

I like the Beatles because they produced great music. In other words, I think we agree. :-)

>>By Mikey_Canuck   (Monday, 26 Apr 2004 18:01)

If you want to know the Beatles dont listen to the ONE cd, it sucks, its cool cuase u know all the words but its what people base the beatles on becuase thats what they hear all the time. The Beatles actually have A LOT MORE music then just those 20 some odd songs and all of it is revolutionary for its time and just incredible. Also i have a question...the 9th song on the Let it be CD i think its called A me me my or somthing of the sort, anyone know if it is a remake of a 1000 year old spanish song...becuase my spanish teacher sings songs to us and one sounded exactly like it so i was just wondering. Anyways the beatles deserve every bit of acclaim they've recieved and thats a fact.

>>By Antinitiative   (Tuesday, 27 Apr 2004 00:20)

The ninth song on Let it Be is "I me mine" by George Harrison. As far as I know it's completely original and has no connection to an old Spanish song.

>>By Mikey_Canuck   (Tuesday, 27 Apr 2004 02:59)

Hmmm.....George Harrison ripping off someone else's song? I dunno. He got into some trouble over "My Sweet Lord" 'cause it sounded a little too much like the Chiffons' "He's So Fine." I guess it's possible.

Oh, and Mikey, didn't mean to attack you there, buddy. My anger was misdirected and I apologize. It's just that I hear that "overrated" always applied to the Beatles and it ticks me off a bit. I mean, their sound even influences hip-hop artists, for Pete's sake. This one DJ (DangerMouse? not sure) has just gotten into trouble for mixing Jay-Z's "Black Album" w/the "White Album." And Andre-3000 of Outkast said that the Beatles appearance on Sullivan inspired his video for "Hey Ya!" Not to mention the catchy, bouncy keyboard melody in the song.

>>By The Walrus   (Wednesday, 28 Apr 2004 16:38)

Hi there Walrus. No need to apologize. I didn't feel attacked. I thought maybe my first message wasn't clear. That's all. It's always fun to hear what other Beatles fan think. :-)

You're right. The Beatles are still influencing music today.
