Symphony X is my favorite group! Every member is a pure genius! Romeo is a guitare Hero, Russell Allen is a great singer, Pinnella is a genius keyboarder,... Since the masterpiece V, the beautiful Twililght in Olympus or the heavy Odyssey, they are simply prog master,!!!

How would you guys rate Symphony X compared to Dream Theater? I'd say that Michael Romeo is a more technical guitarist, but John Petrucci has a more varied style in his playing. Russell Allen beats James LaBrie by thousands of miles! I personally think Jason Rullo is a better drummer, more interesting to listen to, even though Mike Portnoy is better technically. I'd also say that Jordan Rudess is a more wide-ranged keyboardist than Michael Pinnella, but P is really a master of getting the right feeling. John Myung and Michael Lepond are, accordign to me, very even as bassists, but their styles are totally different. I can't say which one I prefer.
I think Symphony X is a lot better than Dream Theater, mainly because they write better songs, and have a vocalist who's way better....but these are just mu opinions. I t would be interesting to see what you other people think....

Symphony x are the most greatful and powerful power progressive metal band in the world. No one like them play in this way the hard power progressive music. I'm a drum player and i really like to play dream theater's and symphony x cover cause in my opinion Portnoy (for fisrt) and Rullo are the most incredible drum player in the world. They are able to play every type of music: jazz, blues, hard rock, heavy metal and so on. Also the other components of these two incredible bands are really realy able: Petrucci and Romeo, Pinnella and Rudess, "Sir" Allen and Labrie,Myung and Lepond; they are very very absurd and they are able to charm me when I listen to their song. The question by me is only one: what may we want more than this???

Symphony X is a great great band...but are dont hold a flame to Dream Theater. All symphony is good for is writing a catchy chorus. The rest of the song is usually very similar to the song before or after. Also i would like to point out that they have ripped off Dream a number of times. Take for instance the intro riffs to Dream Theater - Surrounded and Symphony X - Through The Looking Glass (I, II, III). Also check out Dream Theater - The Mirror and Symphony X - The Death Of Balance. ALSO Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence and Symphony x - The Odyssey. GIVE ME A BREAK, and for your information, all the examples i have given: the DT songs were all written long before the Symphx ones.

the great progressive metal ever

>>By mahmoud   (Tuesday, 7 Jan 2003 11:21)

They're really good in that, the concert is the best that I've ever heard, they have really good songs like the relic, sea of lies, arcollade or evolution

I just wanted to say that I have loved this band from the time Mike told me about putting the band together. I knew then it was going to be a killer band, as it has turned out to be just that. I need to catch up on my listening to them. As the last thing I heard was TDWOT. I still say my favorite song has been and always will be "A Winters Dream"!!! I look forward to hearing the new cd when I can gather up the $$ to get it. I'm even looking forward to finding out if the Masquerade track is the same as the demo one i've got from 94. SYMPHONY X is THE best progressive metal band. I love you guys! Jeffrey

>>By JeffreyCollins   (Wednesday, 22 Jan 2003 07:20)

hahaha, well i love progressive music, im just satrting to hear this actual group in wich i got a lot of hope. They soud great!!! keep going!

>>By progrssssssssoul   (Sunday, 16 Feb 2003 06:44)

Great music.A combination of great neo cllasic and speed metal. It's not exactly prog. metal if only because of the sound wich is to clean.

>>By x   (Monday, 24 Feb 2003 22:23)

I was first introduced to this band by my friend. I bought their album the odyssey and all I can say is WOW. I just started to really get into progressive metal, and all I listen to now is dream theater and symph x. Found out just in time to catch their first US tour. Now I get to see another show on feb. 15. I am psyched.

>>By Shakingspasm   (Tuesday, 25 Feb 2003 05:09)

I saw Symphony X with Blind Guardian in Dallas, TX. This band is excellent. It was a wicked tragety when the guitarist's amp went out about 5 minutes before the set. He handled it very well. They put an alternate amp and he still kicked the ass. As far as that difference between Dream Theater and Symphony X, well, after "Scenes from a Memory", Symphony X has obviously taken the throne for most talented prod/metal band around. If you're a fan of Theatre, I feel sorry for you if you happen to call that crap metal. To the vocalist of Symphony X--"She said you got to stick it in the ass".
Keep it heavy Symphony X, and I'll see you guys in the future.

>>By Speednick   (Tuesday, 25 Feb 2003 22:10)

There is no way one can compare in style DreamTheater and SymphonyX due to their vast difference in tone and style. Romeo and Petrucci are two completely different players and both have great aspects and skills to their playing. They both blow my mind and rate as my two top favorite guitarists of all time so far. Both bands are genious and incredibly talented and I wish them both the best of luck.

>>By Tetrionic   (Thursday, 27 Feb 2003 00:11)

I agree with Tetrionic. Symphony X and Dream Theater can't be compared since they do not play the same kind of 'repertoire'.
they are both very technical but I just hope they dont get lazy and diminish the technicality of their music to appeal to a wider range of fans. The last DT and Symphony X cd were less technical (but it is understandable for symphony x since the first songs of the odyssey were more metal-riff oriented). It would be a shame if they had to simplify their music to be able to live touring north america. That's why all of you fans out there must promote these bands as much as you can. Convert them to fulfilling prog metal. The first track (inferno)of the odyssey is very good at doing that. I dont want these bands to finish like Megadeth and metallica....

whats the best song of symphony x?

>>By mmmh   (Tuesday, 11 Mar 2003 22:11)

Compared to Dream Theater?

I Think Symphony X make better music than DT. I also like DT, but it's sometimes a bit over the top. SX is NOT!

The Best Song?

Don't Know, but I enjoy every note of The Divine Wings Of Tragedy. It's a masterpiece

>>By Merilon   (Wednesday, 9 Apr 2003 14:48)

Hey dose anyone know Michael Leponds E-mail address? just woundering?

>>By Yugi   (Thursday, 10 Apr 2003 10:11)

Symphony x kicks ass.

Last saw them live and still their music sounded brilliant!!!
Compared to DT??? Come on, like it's possible for DT to even get to 80 percent of the performance of Symphony x.

My favorite song???
I think it must be 'damnation game'--> ppity they don't play it at live concerts anymore.

>>By Choetus   (Friday, 11 Apr 2003 16:01)

I'm a huge fan of Symphony X (and Dream Theater as well). A half year ago didn't know anything of them till I came in a chatroom and people said they listen to Symphony X. So I downloaded some songs and I liked it already. Then some months later, so 2 weeks ago, I saw them live and they were amazing! I mean, I have seen Dream Theater's show as well, but this concert of SyX was absolutely great! You guys should all go to see them!

I tried to play some songs on my drums but it's really difficult to do. My brother tried to play Michael Romeo's stuff but it's too hard. They are just great musicians :o). Symphony X forever

I think SyX's best song is Candlelight Fantasia or The Odyssey or....all their songs are good anyway. Sea of Lies is great as well.

By the way: They didn't rip anything of Dream Theaters music because it's totally different and Dream Theaters uses a different technique then Symphony X.

Hi!I saw Symphony X yesterday evening at the IOL Stadium in Milan.
I didn't know them and now I must say thata they're GREAT!!!
I love DT, expecially LaBrie's voice, but Allen has a wonderful voice too.
Completely different from LaBrie style (that's more...melodic I think), but really really amazing! His voice reminds me of RJDio and Tony Martin (Black Sabbath). He's also a great showman and the whole band is fantastic.
Like someone said, "Keep on rockin' in the free world..."
Bye Bye

I play in a prog/powermetal band in Holland called MERILON and we're trying to record our first demo and we would like to add a Symphony X cover.

Any Suggestions on which one we should play? we are thinking about Of Sins and Shadows... but the bassline is HARD!(I play bass!)

>>By Merilon   (Wednesday, 16 Apr 2003 11:55)

Cool, I don't see many prog/powermetal bands here in Holland :). Of Sins and Shadows is a nice song and very difficult to play on the bass indeed. You also can try to play Sea of Lies for example or Evolution. I like those songs a lot. Evolution was my first Symphony X song I heard and I fell in love with it.

Symphony X rocks! \m/

Regarding the discussion about DT Vs. Symphony X

Both seem to have equal relatively equal guitarists, bassists, and drummers. The only major difference are the singers and the keyboardists. With regards to vocals, I feel that Symphony X win hands down (I don't like LaBrie that much). But with regards to keyboards, I think that Rudess has the higher ability and playing versatitlity.

>>By Mister 4   (Saturday, 26 Apr 2003 12:12)

Indeed Sea of Lies is a good song. but even harder to play on bass. But I can tell you we've almost made up our mind.

There are two songs we want to try. Inferno and Evolution(yes indeed). we are gonna try both and see which one works out the best for us.
