You're right it isn't. Rap is a verb, like sing. The correct term is hip-hop, and that is music, often one of the most inspiring and intellectual musical genres there is.
Sadly, Snoop Dogg isn't and never has been inspiring or intellectual, he (along with Tupac, Jay-Z and Eminem) is one of the most overrated MC's ever. He wouldn't last a second up against true hip-hop geniuses like El-P, MF Doom or Mr Lif.
