Richard Thompson

Does anyone know if the Rumor and Sigh surround CD/DVD reviewed in a recent Sound & Vision issue is available yet? If so, how can I go about ordering it, since it's not available through retail outlets yet.

Dear Friends of RT:

As a late-blooming fan of Richard Thompson, my love of his music and lyrics has broadened my musical horizons immensely. He brings a uniqueness to folk/rock composition that will be a standard for decades to come.

I am looking for DVDs of RT in concert. I would also appreciate knowing how to purchase sheet music or finding his chordings on the Web. Thus far I've progressed with little progress. But I've floated on air to hear oracles.

Looking for a place to start? Try "Small Town Romance", a long acoustic concert with an excellent selection of many of his best songs. Beautiful guitar, singing, and most of all songs!

Richard,

Check out http://people.netcom.co.uk/r.kendrick/rt/. There are some decent links to tablature and stuff for Richard Thompson there.

I have been a fan for a while and I witnessed a stunning show here in Chicago a few years back on a bill with Patty Smith that showed what one voice, one guitar and 10,000 people can accomplish.

Personally, I find his stuff kinda daunting to pull off because it requires a solid technique with the thumbpick. Whenever I start to become accquainted with the thumbpick, I chicken out and revert to flatpicking in live situations. His thumbpick/finger roll technique provides a solid melodic core to the songs and is always in service to the tune. And the tunes are phenomenal. He does not get hemmed in stylistically to his legend and he remains very contemporary in his approach, which I find admirable. Furthermore, he is a brilliantly funny guy. If you are going to do dour folk balladry evoking death and dissolution, you'd better be able to create the odd belly laugh.

I think he is probably most amused by guitarists who seek to cop his style. In my mind he likely throws in the odd interval and the obscure tuning in an effort to make his stuff formidable and to make the plebes bleed.
