Modest Mouse
Forum
This band reinvents themselves every album, so some albums turn out better than others. They're pretty consistently good, though. The new one is fantastic, if you like Tom Waits. My fave is Lonesome Crowded West, then Moon and Antarctica.

i don't know what any of you people like about this crap. this band is as awful as everything else being shoved down your throats by radio and mtv. sheep i say... you are all sheep. think for yourself...
>>By 8drummer8 (Saturday, 31 Jul 2004 21:27)
and what kind of music do you like, drummer? you do realise that modest mouse aren't the most publicised bands ever. just because float on has been on mtv of late doesn't mean that everyone who likes them are like "wow, it's on mtv, it must be good". you have to hear music from somewhere. i know that's how i discovered modest mouse was through mtv. big deal. i shouldn't worry about what other people think.

i only know modest mouse sinca a few days but yet now i´ve the feeling that i won´t be able to live without them any more

Ive been a modest fan for over three years and now that their on MTV, that blows ass. mainstream is over-rated and a I think MM was as big a band as any other coporate logo wanna-be indie punk rockers out there. I agree, Jermiah Greene was the bands heart because it was all about the music, but times change, and unfortunantley bands will too. But they are still fucking a cool ass band ever. Its sad that there going mainstream, but I loved them underground, now everyone thinks GOOD NEWS is their first album when they dont know jack shit about them, that shows no love. Late. p/s before saying your a dedicated fan, do some rerseach.
>>By shaneford (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 21:11)
I heard Jeremiah's back in the band.
Whoever said SAD SAPY SUCKER is their best is a fool. Unless you were being faux-hipster, in which case I'm a fool. It has some great songs on it ("Dukes Up" is a personal favorite), and it's fun to listen to, especially to see the way they've changed over the years, but it's not one of those cases where the lo-fi/early stuff is better than the more readily available material (unlike Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard's lo-fi solo stuff recorded as All-Time Quarterback, which i think is much better than DCFC).
Those of you who have just discovered Modest Mouse should check out a variety of their older stuff. Not just THE MOON & ANTARCTICA and THE LONESOME CROWDED WEST (both great albums in their own right). Alot of my favorite Modest Mouse tracks are little gems on otherwise only pretty-good releases, like the aforementioned "Dukes Up" from SAD SAPPY SUCKER, "Dirty Fingernails" from THE FRUIT THAT ATE ITSELF, "So Much Beauty" available on EVERYWHERE AND HIS NASTY PARLOR TRICKS, "Never Ending Math Equation" and "Interstate 8" and "Broke" and "Medication" (all available on BUILDING NOTHING OUT OF SOMETHING), and the majority of the full-length album THIS IS A LONG DRIVE FOR SOMEONE WITH NOTHING TO THINK ABOUT, especially "Dramamine" and "Talking Shit About A Pretty Sunset".
That's not to say that there aren't amazing songs on their two most popular pre-GOOD NEWS LPs. "Paper Thin Walls", "Dark Center Of The Universe", "I Came As A Rat" and "Alone Down There" are superb songs from THE MOON & ANTARCTICA, and THE LONESOME CROWDED WEST kills me with the dual one-two-three punches of "Cowboy Dan", "Trailer Trash", "Out Of Gas" and "Trucker's Atlas", "Polar Opposites", "Bankrupt On Selling".
Just a few suggestions.
>>By Spiff (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 21:37)
Spiff, your absolutley right. THIS IS A LONG DRIVE FOR SOMEONE WITH NOTHING TO THINK ABOUT, is a pretty damn good album. I own all, except there 7" albums that are mostly hard to find, and THE FRUIT THAT ATE ITSELF and EVERYWHERE AND HIS NASTY PARLOUR TRICKS, have my favorite songs. "Truckers Atlas" is the best 12 minute song I like, so i cant disagree. But for the am's out there, there is way more than THE MOON AND ANTARTICA. Just like Spiff said, good lookin out. I hope Jermiah is back in the band...

modest mouse is a wonderful & truly innovative band. i love "everything & his nasty parlour tricks". and also, anyone who thinks they are a pixies rip off isn't listening hard enough--simple as that.
>>By fire_girl (Wednesday, 20 Oct 2004 12:29)
i meant "everywhere & his nasty parlour tricks"...shit...i've been up too damn long.
>>By fire_girl (Wednesday, 20 Oct 2004 12:30)
let me say that the first modest mouse I ever heard was "float on". How was I to know what I had stumbled upon. This band unbelievable. Since I first heard "good news for people who love bad news" I've bought every album from Sad Sappy Sucker to Moon and Antartica. Every one is amazing in its own right, but my favorite has to be "Bulding Nothing out of Something". Workin on leaving the liven" and "whenever I breath out you breath in" are amazing. Long Drive for some one with nothing to think about" is an amazing album as well. This band is not for everyone though. Thank God. Float On is radio friendly but that is about as far as that goes. Look into these guys and LISTEN to them. Headphones are a great idea. Here is a website with some live shows you can listen to really easily:

Best 8drummer8,
I have known Modest Mouse since 1996 when I first herad them on underground radio. This was also the last time I heard them on the radio in the Netherlands (and outside, but that must be because I don't know the right channels abroad). I tried to get their record beack then, but only achieved to get the record by ordering it from the usa. The indepent shops never heard of the band, but could order it. The people in the chainshops only could look at me with their sheep eyes. As I understand you are not a big fan of MTV, neither am I. This is because most of the time they don't play any interesting music, always play the same stuff over and over and seem to be hangoutboards for the big companies that have to sell their BS to the mindless. This means in The Netherlands that you can forget about hearing anything like Modest Mouse through MTV. So I wasn't even aware that they had a videoclip or anyother promotional material that could be broadcasted on MTV (or the likes for that matter). I do believe anyway that Modest Mouse is a good band. They have a sound that I like, a sound which is not very much heard. A sound that you obviously don't like. This still doesn't mean that I don't have a taste of my own, that I just buy everything they try to sell to me. BELIEVE ME, the opposite is true. I am a very critical consumer and only buy what I like, not what is liked in the heat of the moment.
In short: IF YOU HAVE TO JUDGE ME, JUDGE ME ON FACTS. Don't judge me on what happens in your small partin the universe. The world is not America, and there actually people who go through a whole deal to get their own stuff together based on what they like. Not on what is pushed trough their throats. If that would be the case I would now be writting that The White stripes are great, and Frans Ferdinand is not a weak copy of XTC and The Talking Heads............

I went to see MM in glasgow the other day (well he just drove off...never mind :) - I've got to say, they were truly awful. First time I've ever seen them live - I really like their albums, but that was probably one of the worst gigs I've ever been to. Isaac looked like he really wanted to be somewhere, anywhere else, they played their songs in the worst possible order, there were huge gaps inbetween the songs, and they completely massacred Float On. No attempt at crowd interaction, except some occasional mumbles into the microphone. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Has anyone else seen them live and thought they were really good? Do tell...

Sometimes bands just dissapoint live. Never saw them live, but I heard some live recordings of them though, and those didn't sound like they were uninspired. Maybe rthey just didn't have their day. Humans, you know......

that is what i like most about modest mouse... they kinda suck. I love listening to their old bootlegs, its just raw shit. you dont get that on your MTV and your Radio anymore. And they can take you to the outer realms of the universe as well. dont diss the mouse... just listen

i think whom ever was disappointed about hearing MM live, wasnt listening right. When I heard modest mouse live, they were the fucking shit, totally kicked ass. I never wanted the night to end. Of course, this was before Good News for people who love Bad News came out, I think their live albums are fucking awesome, any one who begs to differ can kiss my ass. No personal offense to anyone, but this is the only band, whatever you want to call it has ever made sense to me, the melodies, guitar solos, the lyrics are all very inspiring. It is true, that MM is NOT for everyone, and this includes wanna-be-punk-rockers, who wear all the materialezed clothing, accessories, shit, but cant ever know waht the true meaning if punk/indie, is. that just blows my mind. I dont understand people. My way of life, is there fashion sense of the year or seomthing. that fucking blows ass. any what that was off the subject, but yes, they were very fuckign good Live, that was my point.

I personally love Modest Mouse, the way they mix sounds from New Wave and Classic Rock is awesome. I can't wait for their next CD to come out! Float on! -Wednesday

Everyone is raving about the latest record but I like the old ones better, sorry... I guess I'm just not hip enough...
>>By thom (Monday, 28 Feb 2005 23:15)
yeah, I agree, the old albums are definantly better. The new one os alright, but it seems like it doesnt have to same effect.

I got to see MM again, it was cool, but not as cool as the first time. but still pretty a bad ass show.

i most definitely concur with the above statement. i would say "Good News for..." is probably the weakest of all the cds. i love "The Moon & Antarctica" (2000?)

I actually love "The fruit ate itself", but that's only an EP. Still a great EP.
