No, that’s not a stupid question. I, myself, do not like to limit music by slapping labels on it, but……..I guess you could classify them as doom metal? I think that that is the best term used to describe their unique sound. I discovered them when “The Discouraged Ones” was released. I acquired the single “Dead House” on a compilation album. After listening to that song about a dozen times, I had to have the cd. Katatonia’s music plays like the soundtrack to a life of a homeless wonderer, lost in a post apocalyptic wasteland. Beautiful and dark, a perfect blend. The vocals are so haunting, like someone who has completely given in to despair. I have yet to hear a song that I do not like.

mmm...i do not agree with u ,at least 'bout the lattest album it is not the true doom genre. i think that their purest doom album is "dance of december soul" with its depressive atmasphere ,tortored voice and monotonious notes...that s what we call the honey of doom...the lattest is doom plus alternative which gives the band a more or less comercial guideline.

i did not mean that Katatonia is pure alternative as alice in chains or the new wave of british alt
but they just add a kind of innovation to their doomy style (just llike Anathema's transition between silent enigma and alternative4...see)...to be frank i did not "grasp" brave.m.d but sounds more aggressive than discouraged ones...i liked the last fair...by the way what do you mean by avant garde?

Avant-garde is music which doesn't really fit into any genres at all... so avant-garde doom is doom with elements of undefinable music

ok...for me the typical doom is early Paradise Lost and My ying bride, and also the early anathema; but M.D.B succeeded in diverging to their own style...and so are Katatonia
