jimi hendrix was an awesome guitarist and songwriter, but for orchestration and such, jimmy page of zeppelin was far better. Take a listen to the new "How the West Was Won" live album if you don't believe me. "Since I've Been Loving You" far outdoes any Hendrix work, and Page rarely used any effects, whereas Hendrix's sound was aided by Arbiter Fuzz Faces, Unvibes, etc.

and as for the ultimate guitar sound, i've never heard anything as captivating as David Gilmour's solo on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," although the song itself is weak unless one is under the influence of mind-altering substances.

too bad hendrix died in 1970 I think that he was a great inspiration to everybody who listened to his music. He was the all time greatest. Hendrix inspired many other artists of rock i dont know if you people have seen the video of hendrix at woodstock when he open up with purple haze after playing part of the star spangled banner with his teeth it was total greatness HENDRIX ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know a bit about guitar and listen to newer metal and punk but when i want to hear a real master at work i put in some jimmy. NO ONE can do it like him, just something about the way he plays that makes him so great. Knowing the technolagy they had then compared to today's distortion added effects ect. just makes jimmy even better. .... All Along the Watch Tower = best guitar riff i've ever heard.

basically i used to just view him as a druggie ,hippie etc,but then i actually started listening to his music to see what all the fuss was about.
and you guessed it i was amazed. when i heard voodoo child slight return my
hairs used to stand on end when he gets into that solo wow!
i then watched his woodstock performance on bbc2 one day and that was when it was confirmed why he is the greatest rock musician ever the way he came across was so free and inspiring.and just when i thought i couldnt get any more amazed
i saw his live performance of johnny be goode on a dvd!!his whole effort and soul just poured through that i was stunned especially at the end with that solo part!!whoa!

lost of people don't realize that jimi had a different impact in the rock&roll world of music that most of use know ,not only he was the best ever but he was a african american man that could play the guitar better than every body else.Ace Freyley ,Randy Road , Steve Vai,Van Halen and many more were inspired by him and his very different music.in fact, when Jimi was playing for the first time in a bar,Eric Clapton,Pete Townsend and Jimi Page were their. After seing Hendrix play,Eric Clapton "belived to be the best guitar player at the time"went home and did not play guitar for a long time!and Pete Townsend i belive, smach up his guitar.A true story.

need i say more?

As we all know, Hendrix was and is the greatest guitarist the world has discovered. Red House ( I know it's not truly his), The Wind Cries Mary, Voodoo Child, and just about all his other songs are absolute pieces of art and anyone who says otherwise will hopfully learn in time. As for him being African American, what the hell does that have to do with anything? Yes, he was ridiculously godly. Yes, he was African American. He IS God and race had nothing to do with anything. That said, rock on everyone and keep enjoying Hendrix!!

>>By WTF?   (Saturday, 26 Jul 2003 09:57)

Actually Jimi got the idea of smashing his guitar FROM Pete Townsend not the other way around. Also, Why would Eric Clapton make anyome proud to be from America? The Dude was British for god's sake.

I have to agree with leadhead. I love Jimi, and I think he was a revolutionary guitarist, but he can't quite compare to Jimmy Page. The difference between Page and Hendrix is that Page is so diverse in his playing styles, playing everything from huge, powerful rock riffs like in Whole Lotta Love to beautiful acoustic archepeggios like in Babe I'm gonna leave you, while Hendrix always played electric blues and rock. Page also played far better solos than Hendrix. Jimi was a very heartfelt muscian though, not always technically brilliant, but his music always came straight from his soul.

And as far as best ever solos go, the version of Comfortably Numb on PULSE is right up there, but I've always been a huge fan of Mike McCready's (from Pearl Jam) solo in Even Flow. Not the recorded one, its when its played live, sometimes he takes himself and his guitar right out onto some higher plane of existence, way above the rest of the band or the crowd.

There are many here among us, who feel that life is but a joke, but you and I we've been through that, and this is not our fate, so let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.
All along the watchtower, princes kept the view, while all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the cold distance, a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, and the wind began to howl.

go in peace jimi, and save me a seat at god's right.

"I have a humming bird and it hums so loud,
You think you were losing your mind, hmmm..."

I have been waiting thirtythree years now, still nobody better.

"If I don’t meet you no more in this world then uh
I’ll meet ya on the next one
And don’t be late
Don’t be late"

I like Jimi just as much as the next guy, but really. The radio plays Free Bird so often that I don't ever want to hear it anymore. That's one of the reasons why the radio is bad for you.

Oh please, stop this Jimi vs Page talk. They were very different. Maybe compare Jimi with Vaughan, or Kenny Wayne Sheperd or something if you must, but its almost nonsense, since Jimi was really the father of a whole new breed of guitarists, who influenced many of todays incredible guitar players. Jimi now doesn't stand close to many of them technically etc, but his legacy still stands tall, and there is hardly any person who does not know about Jimi. That definately speaks for itself.

Apparently Yngwie Malmsteen (neo-classical guitarist) picked up the guitar the day Jimi died in 1970. Does anyone know this to be true or not?

Go to the steve vai site in gnoosic on the second page, and look for my name. Over there I namedrop lots of my fave guitarists, and I think I didn't forget to mention Hendrix.

Off u go.
