Frank Black

Forum

"Devil's Workshop" and "Black Letter Days" were both quite a long ways off from his self-titled album and "Teenager of the Year." At first I found them a little on the twangy side, but for these particular songs it works wonders. Now, after listening to them about five thousand times more, I have a real respect for his musical ability. The mood of the album, especially "Black Letter Days," evokes a feeling of some great old-fashioned ballads. Frank Black and the Catholics have created their own unique niche in an industry filled with mediocrity. I sound like a music reviewer, but I really enjoyed these albums, moreso than most music I've bought over the past four or five years.

I saw Frank Black and the Catholics in Calgary on April 7/03. The show blew me away. The Hall was small so it was pretty intimate. The show had a ton of energy. The opening act the Tangiers were also very good. The last time that I saw them was in Vancouver in 98 when they opened for Pearl Jam at GM place. Only disapointment was that we didn't get to hear Solid Gold or I need Peace. They have so much Material so I guess it is understandable. They put on a solid show. Nice to see that there is still music out there as compared to all this Skate Boarder shit that all the stations play. There is hope...Bands like Frank Black and the Catholics, White Stripes, Vines, Pearl Jam......That's rock'n roll.......

I've had the same experience with every one of his albums since "teenager". I buy it, am disappointed, sometimes don't listen to it for days or weeks, then listen to it and suddenly I'm hooked and listen to it nonstop for days. I like Black Letter Days about the best of anything he's done the past few years, but I didn't like it at all the first time I listened to it. I don't know what it is, but Frank's work has a way of slowly growing on you. From what I've seen in various discussion groups, this is not an uncommon experience. He's well worth a third or fourth listen.

I've been a fan of most of Frank's material from Pixies on up.. Particularly 9 of the tracks from 'Teenager of the Year". I have bought the first 3 "Catholics" albums and am happy with basically 1 C.D's worth of material from them.. ( I'm very discerning!). Really didn't like 'Dog in the Sand' to begin with, but now consider it among his best - Particularly 'St. Francis Dam Disaster', - surprising for me as I have an aversion to banjo's.... Anyway, I've been considering getting the last 2 ( Black letter Days & Devil's Workshop), but most of the reviews are pretty dour ! .. Has he continued in the vein of 'Dog in the Sand' ? I realise that each of his releases to date has been unique.. I'm just wondering if there is a corelation in these last 3 releases from the Catholics ?

FB & The C's kick the shit out!
BLACK LETTER DAYS, DOG IN SAND, SHOW ME YOUR TEARS, DEVIL'S WORKSHOP...
What's not to like?
Yeah, they're LONG and you can get away with skipping some of the tracks on them, but he puts out an hour or two of new songs a year on average, and if you keep up with his work you won't be disappointed.
I love Kim Deal, but any of these records blows The Breeders' stuff away.
