Donny Hathaway

Donny is an inspiration, and I continue to listen to his music, as if he is still here. It's funny, "A song for you" is a cover, and you would'nt know it. Donny has made all covers his own, once he touches it. I was so sad to here that he was a manic depressant, and that led to his distruction in the end. I was told depression was among the reasons that him and Roberta Flack fell out at first, but luckily, they became friends again and recorded before he died. And what a treat "The closer I get to you " was to all of us. Thanks Donny, for the legacy

Donny has a very flexible, yet such a soulful voice. He is definitely one of the great soulmen of his time.... "The Ghetto" is a masterpiece, and I think "Someday We'll All Be Free" is simply one of the most beautful songs ever! It's amazing how little he is remembered today, and if he is, it is mostly for his duets with Roberta Flack (something I don't really care for, frankly).... his own stuff is much richer musically and deeper spiritually. He is, quite simply, one of the most underrated and underappreciated artists in music history. It's very nice to see folks here who like him so much....

This man was simply the greatest combination of talent to ever grace the music scene. Though there styles are different, only Stevie Wonder and Prince even come close to his musical arranging, lyrical, vocal, piano and production skills. I am 34 and grew up on Doony Hathaway, eventhough I was young. However, it was not until the early 90's that I started really getting into his sound. He is fascinating to say the least. "The Closer I get to You" is the most emotion stirring song to date, and "Giving Up " is the best display of vocal mastery I have ever heard in one song. Only Percy Sledge and Luther Vandross should be spoken in the same breath with Donny Hathaway as male singers. Not to take anything from the many great singers like Marvin Gaye, Same Cook, Alexander O'neal and many others, but none except Percy and Luther has the ability to take you to all level of emotional spectrum. None can run the musical gauntlet with such talent as Donny.

I am 34 years old and I only recently discovered the true greatness of this artist. I had only been familiar with his duets with Roberta Flack until I recently heard the song "Giving Up" play during a scene from the show "Girlfriends." I was so moved by the soulfulness of this song that I had to track down the title and the artist. I was surprised to find out that the singer was someone I knew. I love this song, but I am even more deeply moved by "A Song for You." Donny Hathaway made this song his own and gave it the depth and feeling that the lyrics deserved. I have shared the beauty of this man's voice with others and will continue to do so. What a gift to the world!

Oh my God! Donny was truly blessed with his singing talent. I love listening to artists that can REALLY sing. There is a quality to their singing that makes you feel the song down in your soul. This man truly had this gift. What a loss to us all. I can remember when I was younger hearing songs by Donny, but at the time I didn't know who he was until I recently listened to some of his tracks. All I can say is magnificent and I wished that I had been listening to him all along. However, I intend to catch up and buy all of his cds that I can find.

Donny Hathaway is the most amazing artist in the history of music.I'm only 15 years old but, Donny Hathaway has changed my life in a way no words could express. When you hear his voice and his word, you're drawn into every emotion he was feeling at that point and time when he was singing that song.No artist in the world could be as talented as Donnt Hathaway was.I started listening to him after my father passed away. The first song of his I heard was "A Song for You".That song is so full of emotion and love.Because of my father I was raised around music like Donny Hathaway and Etta James and I want to tahnk him for exposing me to such emotinal and powerful music.Donny Hathaway is an inspiration to me.I don't go a day without listening to "Misty" and singing it word for word.

Donny Hathaway was an excellent musician. I fell in love with Hathaway when I first her "This Christmas". I can not have a Christmas without hearing that song now. I am a music lover, of all musicians, and I believe many are inflluenced by Hathaway. At the ending of Alicia Key's concerts she does "Will all be free". He'll never die. I am 19 And I love his Music. It wiil carry on forever. I thank Donny for bringing the strength and beauty of his voice to all of us!

I am only 20 yrs. old. I say about a month ago, I got the chance to listen to his music. I fell in love with his music the minute I heard it. He without a doubt is the best R&B singer in my eyes. Unlike a lot of singers today, he is versatile. It's a shame that my generation has not been exposed to the Greats. He talked about all kinds of issues. His music has taught me more about life. My favorite songs are "Song for You", "Giving Up,"Love, Love, Love", and I can go on and on, but the one that touched me the most is "Someday We'll All Be Free". It's sad to hear how he died. Even though Sisqo from Dru Hill is the closest to resembling his sound, There will never be another like Donny.

I'm so happy to see Donny Hathaway lovers. I'm just 17 myself and a definite music lover. My house looks like a record/ CD store. Donny has been an inspiration to me because of my mother. She listened to him like some people eat food; daily and with passion. I love to listen to extension of a man simply because no one had done what Donny Hathaway had. He came outside of himself to create different styles of music. My only wish was that he had explained thoroughly, as his train of thought was, what exactly each song meant.
I also liked to hear about Donny on a personal level. I love to hear what Roberta Flack thought of him, what his wife thought and what his children thought of him as a man. There are brief "explanations" of how he was but I would love to know about him on a personal level. I plan to go to Howard and follow in his footsteps because I loved him, even because he was before my time. I plan to get a personal explanation of his death, then i can listen to him sing about himself while he sings 'Someday we'll all be free.' Hang on to yhour world as it spins around!

FOR YEARS I'VE BEEN A MARVIN GAYE FAN. JUST AS I BECAME FIXED ON MARVIN AS THE MASTER OF SOUL MUSIC, I WAS INTRODUCED TO DONNY. HIS VOICE IS SOUL, THE PAIN AND PASSION YOU HEAR IN HIS VOICE IS JUST ASTONDING. WHETHER HE'S SINGING ABOUT THE LORD OR A GIRL THE CONVICTION OF HIS SONG IS ENOUGH TO OVERCOME ANYONE OF US THAT SWEAR WE ANALYZE MUSIC. HE IS THE ONLY ARTIST (EMPHASIS ON ARTIST) THAT HAS BEEN ABLE TO BRING A TEAR TO MY FACE; SECULAR OR GOSPEL. BOTTOM LINE...DONNY IS WHERE IT'S AT.

Truly amazing! He is a genius.
He personifies soul music, his band have that chemistry that is impossible to recreate without that special god given gift of funk and soul.
Our band hopes to learn some lessons from him in many ways www.numodus.com

Possibly the greatest voice to have every graced this planet. Sadly, he is virtually unknown at a commercial level. He most definitely inspired the likes of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and their peers. The man is legendary. 'I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know' is the finest song ever recorded...
