It's just been announced that six more albums are coming to CD. Collector's Choice Music is coming out with three two-album sets of:

- Singin' Our Mind / Reflecting
- The Slightly Irreverent Mitchell Trio / Typical American Boys
- That's the Way It's Gonna Be / Violets of Dawn

See http://www.ccmusic.com/search.cfm?searchkey=CHAD%20MITCHELL%20TRIO&bounce=y&searchType=artist for details.   (Tuesday, 1 Apr 2003 03:20)

First, let me say that Chad is NOT on the "That's the Way"/"Violets" set; it's John Denver. Anyway, what can one say about the most beautifully-voiced male singer of the sixties? Why Chad never achieved super-star status, despite some idiotic decisions by his music company and, truth be told, him (like quitting the group!! Like choosing some great songs for his first solo album, and some lousy ones for his second, which led to nada for his third), is one of the universe's mysteries, as far as I'm concerned. To my dying day I will regret never having seen the Trio in concert; I mean, I was IN LOVE with Chad!! All I want in life is to hear a live "If I Gave You" by Chad...*sigh*. Anyway, he and Mike Kobluk live within 2 blocks of each other in Spokane, WA. Joe Frazier became a minister in Southern California. If you're ever in NYC, you can view some CMT performances on tapes at the Museum of Television

oops! Wasn't finished!) ....Television and Radio (one in L.A., too, but I didn't go there). There's one "Ed Sullivan Show" that also has an opera singer on the same show with the "boys"! These and the tapes, plus one video of a reunion concert (yes, I missed that, too; I just never thought about "keeping track" of a defunct group), are as good as it currently gets. But hope springs eternal! (P.S. Chad also later worked for the Delta Queen riverboat.)

I saw The Trio twice in the sixties and I got a chance to talk to Chad before one of his appearances solo in St Paul,MN. My faorite voice of the 60's and of all time. Joe and Mike and, later John Denver were nice voices but there is only one Chad Mitchell. Have you ever heard his version of the Neil Diamond song, "I've Been This Way Before"?

>>By rich Patina   (Sunday, 6 Apr 2003 07:55)

The "closest" I ever got was by mail. I wrote, basically, a fan letter (via Delta Queen) about 10 years ago, and never heard back. Then, MONTHS later, there was not only a reply from Chad but also an APOLOGY for not having written sooner, what with his moving back to Spokane and all! I still love him. If I had seen him in my single years (like those 60's you mention, rich patina), I hope I would have had the presence of mind to propose! To hear Chad Mitchell's voice was to experience musical nirvana. What's your favorite song? For a long time mine was "Mandy Lane", but I'm also partial to "Maladyozhenaya" (playing my LP over and over to learn the words phonetically!), "I Can't Help but Wonder," and "Mighty Day".

Does anyone know the date the Chad Mitchell Trio recorded "Reflecting"? I cannot seem to find confirmation on this anywhere. Thanks

>>By yapzy@aol.com   (Friday, 30 May 2003 02:14)

"Reflecting" was released in 1964. This one is easy to remember, as it contains "Summer of His Years/Rally Round the Flag," a somber reflection on the assassination of JFK, which of course occurred in November of 1963.

Great to find a CMT discussion board!

Also, in response to an earlier post, "Blowin' In The Wind" (also entitled "In Action") was released in 1962.

Also, here is the Yahoo! discussion group a whopping nine of us have been using to discuss CMT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chadmitchelltrio/. Don't bother searching the Yahoo! group directory, as only an old CMT discussion group, which has morphed into an obscene discussion group, is there. For whatever reason, our poor little (legitimate) group does not appear in the directory.

And finally, you can find more fans and friends on a discussion board at www.rediscovermusic.com.

Again, I am *delighted* to find more people discussing CMT! You all obviously have exceptionally good taste. :)

Have always enjoyed CMT and had the opportunity to hear them at Orchestra hall in Chicago. My Aunt picked up our tickets and said "these were all they had left". When we arrived they held about 25 of us off to the side and then told us we had seats On the Stage! It was "First come first serve". I'm pretty fast and arrived before most others. Front row seats about 6 feet away from the CMT !! We felt like we were part of the act. Those spots lights are bright! The energy the Group gave off was unbelievable. Memorable experience.

Al, I am too jealous for words. ;) What year was this? I am in Chicago now...will never look at Orchestra Hall the same way again...

>>By Laura   (Monday, 16 Jun 2003 16:56)

Al, please tell us more about the concert. There are a lot of us out there who have always loved these guys but were WAY too young to go to a concert when they were active!

I remember watching them on television, though - not quite the same thing, but better than nothing.

Thanks!

Laura, Concert was in the early to mid 60's. We had only been married a few years. J. Holly, We just remember that they sang most of our favorites and that they were Great! Exciting to be on the stage with them. Glad to find that "young people" also enjoy the CMT.

>>By Al   (Thursday, 19 Jun 2003 22:56)

I think that the reason that the Chad Mitchell Trio was loved by such an age range of fans is that their work was accessable on many levels (think, for an analogy in another medium, of Rocky and Bullwinkle). For some, the lure was the humor in much of their work. For others, it was the songs - their voices wove songs like fine brocade. And let's not forget that they had great voices!

I've never understood why they weren't as successful as they should have been, but I'm grateful that they were there and that they did what they did so very, very well.

I got to see CMT in concert sometime between 1964-1967 at Loyola University in Chicago. the concert was held in the cafeteria, a very small venue. My friends and I who were a folk singing group arrived an hour early and got to sit in the front row about four feet from the stage. What an experience!!! I have loved Chad's voice especially his work with the Trio since I first heard it on the Mighty Day album. My favorite is any ballad where Chad's voice soars above and floats. It still brings the chills, like when he starts out, "coffe grows on white oak trees..." in a song whose name I can never remember. I believe my favorite CMT song is the ballad "Four Strong Winds."

I happened upon this discussion group by accident and am extremely glad I found it! I could discuss Chad's exquisite voice forever.

I'm a boomer like the rest of you. Although a bit young to appreciate the satire of the Chad Mitchell Trio -- only 12 when their first album came out -- I knew that it was funny and, somehow, important. My theory is that they were too politically extreme and perhaps a bit too sophisticated for mass appeal. But damn I loved them. I still weep when I hear their songs. Does anyone know how to contact them? I think I would especially like to express my gratitude to Chad for being one of the major influences on my adolescence. Do any of you know an e-mail address for him?

Glad to see this discussion. I went to a Bob Newhart Concert in '61 - '62 and the Chad Mitchell Trio opened for them. It took about 30 seconds of Mighty Day for me to fall in love with them and folk music -- stronger today than ever. I just found a Chad Mitchell autograph today as part of some moving -- I saw them about a dozen times in restaurants, gymnasiums, etc. Saw Chad in a great play in Milwaukee in the '70's -- that voice was so great to listen to.

>>By Jim   (Sunday, 13 Jul 2003 03:03)

Wow, Jim!

Please tell us about the play - was it a musical? What was it?

I have heard that when the Trio was opening for Bob Newhart they ended up turning it around - and Bob opened for the Trio - I also read that at least one review of the show spent more time raving about the Trio than Bob, who was supposed to be the star attraction.

I've been trying to track down reviews - did you save any?

First I want to say that with all due respect to the late John Denver (I even had one of his albums once) to me replacing Chad Mitchell with Denver always seemed rather like replacing the Mona Lisa with a Velvet Elvis. John Denver wasn't bad, actually (like I said, I had one of his albums -"Aerie" I think was the title), but compared to the crystal clear, amazing voice of Chad Mitchell, very few people would sound good. When I was a kid my older sister had 2 CMT albums and I loved their voices. Then years later I was cat-sitting for a friend and discovered a collection of CMT albums. Hearing those familiar voices singing "new" songs brought tears to me eyes!!!

>>By AlbertaJ   (Friday, 8 Aug 2003 04:18)

P.S.. . .I now have 12 CMT albums and 3 Chad solo albums!!!!!

>>By AlbertaJ   (Friday, 8 Aug 2003 04:22)

Me again. By the way, the friend that I was cat-sitting for later moved to Idaho and sent me a great Christmas present in '93. He'd seen Chad in a play in Spokane and had gotten his autograph on the program for me!!!!!!! It's now in a frame on my living room wall!!!!!

>>By AlbertaJ   (Friday, 8 Aug 2003 21:14)

Do any of you know that Chad has a CD now? It's called Virgo Moon. I've had it in my collection for a couple of years now.
