Following in the finest tradition of West African/Caribbean Oratory, Capleton is important not only as a Reggae artist, but also as a writer and performance artist in the wider arena of post-modern culture.
HIs cultural imperative is Bobo Shanti Rastafari, yet this is really only the starting point of 'The Prophet's' dialectic. In many of his lyrics he demonstrates a familiarity with complex linguo-philisophical ideas, the likes of which are rarely seen referenced outside of academic circles. He is also a radical, even by standards of the Rastafari movement. Much of his rhetorical emphasis focuses in on the deconstructing the Western/ Platonic/ Christian/ Capitalist myth of an ultimate force outside of humanity (God, Metaphysics, or even The Market) and seeks to demonstrate the reality of humanity's indwelling Godhead.
There is so much that is yet to be said about this man's work that a whole book would be needed to contain it. I am currently compiling a complete anthology of King Shango's lyrics together with an intellectual biography. I would be delighted to hear from any Capleton enthusiast out there who have anything to add with regards to analysing this most important 21st century Black writer.

well all i have to say is that before i met capleton i always though that he was a very hyperactive person and i always wanted to meet him,but was afraid because i thought that he would be difficult to talk to,but when i got the apportunity to meet him,it was totaly different . Capleton is a very sweet,gentle and a very loving person and to tell you the truth i did not expect that. But as people say YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER. Capleton demonstrates to the youth that compromise for fame or success is fantasy. Thus far, it would appear that the further King Shango and the David House crew imbed themselves in the livity and tenets of the Rastafari faith the brighter their star shines.
Capleton's commercial hegemony has been won without concessions to 'political correctness' and bowing and scraping to corrupt forces within the record industry.
Lately, men and people have attempted to besmirch the name of Rastafari by claiming we are homophobic. When we say we burn batty man, they claim we refer to only homosexuals. To Rastafari children the batty man goes beyond merely those unfortunates who sleep with people of the same gender, the batty man is the epitomy of all that is anti-nature within western society. If you a Ku Klux Klan, you a batty man, if you a satanist, you a batty man. If you practise witchcraft, snort cocaine, rape women, brutalise children, shoot gun after black people, or sell we out for material gain, then you is batty man and sodomite. If you a dreadlocks and don't respect Emperor Haile Selassie I then we burn you as batty man. Don't think you can hide your filth actions, simply by disguising yourself, we burn you to ashes.
As for homosexuals, we burn you all. In Africa before European colonialism there was no history of homosexuality. Our introduction to anal sex came on the slave ships and in the plantations during our captivity. Runaway slaves who were caught were raped as a warning to other slaves. We burn batty boy without reservation.
Therefore, we big up Marcus Mosiah Garvey and we burn the batty boy Willie Lynch. We burn batty boy George Bush. We burn batty boy Tony Blair and his batty boy government and we demand they return our literatures, our artefacts and they take their sodomite kith and kin out of Zimbabwe, out of Azania, out of Kenya, out of the Congo and clear the hell back to Europe and allow Africa's lost children to return home.
Kill Pope Paul, Kill Eliza-bitch. Long live Robert Mugabe and all praises to HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I and HIM Empress Menen the First, the true divine royal family for the African Diaspora.
