I came back on to the music scene to late to tell you from my personal experience, but if you would check the amazon.com sound samples and reviews of the CDs in the left hand margin as well as maybe exploring Wilco, Son Volt, and Jay Farrar, as a solo artist, you should be able to get a decent sense.
