| Discussion: The Hives THIS BAND IS SO FUCKIN GAY Um, okay....I guess you don't like them? (lol) I have to say that I do....Sorry...Their music has a lot of energy to it....It's entertaining and it's fun...I'll admit, their cockiness gets on my fuckin nerves... Every one of them has the same pre-recorded robotic shtick, and it's beyond irritating. What they forgot to tell you is that they get paid by the Swedish government to be in bands that rape and pillage the back catalogs of popular and obscure bands from the 50's and 60's. Yeah, a bunch of hockey loving, incestuous dipshits ripping off James Brown who have seen about as many black people in their sheltered little snow day lives as we've seen green men from Mars. Their culture is so wanna-be American, they've completely stolen Canada's thunder. Australia is pissed too. And there's no end in sight, cos instead of having to struggle in poverty for years to pay their dues like bands in the rest of the world, these crackers are out of the gates in hordes before you can blink with half of guitar center in their plush vans, and into our country trying to tell us what time it is. Gritty, nostalgic, simple--but mediocre, April 19, 2003 Reviewer: A music fan from st louis If you like their sound in the first song--well, all the songs sound the same, so you're in luck: that's it, kids. The singer's hipper-than-thou style can be just what the doc ordered, but it gets annoying; the lo-fi, (originally delightfully) uncomplicated post-grunge music isn't wearing well with time. In other words, this is a Kraft Mac-n-Cheez kind of album: delightfully reminiscent of your once-trendy red tennies, endless Atari battles, summer nights spent in a small town in the parking lot at Wal-Mart, but ultimately it doesn't sit that well in your stomach, being cheap and empty. Eventually, you grow up and move on to something with more substance. Or go back to the old favorites it reminded you of in the first place. THE HIVES ARE COOL! THEY HAVE SO MUCH ENERGY THEY ARE GREAT TO WATCH! I am sad that somehow their record was slipped under the table and made it to radio stations. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS WITH THAT DETONIZED VOICE OF THE BAD VOCALIST! I hate that guy. He sucks big time! I can't believe how those radio stations play the song "Because I wanna" and "Main offender". Sorry these 2 are the ones I heard from them right now, and made me their enemies! They suck so so so so badly. The vocalist should fix his voice somehow and not shout that much! AND THEN THE BAND SHOULD FIND SOME NEW TUNES! NOT JUST PLAY CHORDS! Take Coldplay for example! An awesome band to turn all the way up while driving. Personally, I don't give a shit about the personality of the band. For some people I guess that's an important factor... Their songs could be a little longer but other than that, I love love love the lead singer's voice and how much energy the band as a whole gives off. They're really upbeat and a refreshing change from almost everything out right now, each song is full of energy and really catchy, plus they dont take alot of it seriously coz that would be weird and ive never seen these guys be cocky but hey, in the world of music, cockyness is free advertising! :) >>By Breaker_17 It's amazing how much energy people will expend to write about a band they don't like. I hope you guys feel better after releasing all that negative pent up energy. You'd think you were being forced to listen to the Hives hourly. I especially find the people who invent words like 'arseeee (how many Es?)' amusing. So, that's EEEEE like, well, a bunch of Es, is it? Very clever. I'm glad I didn't have to hear you scream that out. You'd sound almost like Howlin' Pelle. I wasn't impressed by the Hives before but the new album sounds like they are doing something creative with their sound. Their older stuff doesn't sound much different from 70s and 80s 'punk' rock. But on the new album Pelle is being a bit more creative with his screaming, and the band seem to be rather cleverly mixing a variety of styles, not just Sex Pistols but also 60s The Who, The Yardbirds and The Sonics. Did anyone catch part in 'Love In Plaster' that sounds a bit like the theme of 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly?' I hope they will continue to experiment and be creative. As for people who say the Hives are just ripping off older bands, well, that seems to be the trend these days. Look at Sloan, Jet and The Datsuns. It's a 70s Rock Revival. I think it's great. Nothing new and exciting has been coming out for a while anyway. And for people who say the Hives have no talent, that has been said about a lot of bands over the decades, and usually those bands are the most successful. So it seems having 'no talent' and 'sucking' are the keys to success in the music world. Maybe that's because the general public doesn't appreciate real talent (?) or maybe they do and others just don't understand what real talent is. Who knows? Good luck to the Hives.
