Discussion: The Decemberists

I just found gnod, typed in my favorite discs and lo and behold who should pop up but the Decemberists. Now I can't say that I have heard a Decemberists disc but I knew the name immediately as Colin used to front my favorite Missoula MT band- Tarkio. Nods to gnod!

I want to buy a Decemberists album...which one should I choose...Picaresque or Her Majesty...these 2 have been recommended most highly

hm... that is a good question, well i got Her Majesty before Picaresque. but both cds are amazing! i am serious. both are about equally matched song-for-song, really. but i guess i'd say ahhh i duno! picaresque! wait, no. her majesty. no! yeah... i'm not exactly the most decisive person. just get both! orrrr go to their homepage and listen to the songs?

but really, probably picaresque...

I'd agree with Sars. Picaresque is a good introduction.

If you have access to.. sampling software.. download "The Legionaire's Lament" or "The Mariner's Revenge Song". These two songs seem to epitomize what the Decemberists sound like, as well as showing the depth of the lyrics and originality of the group.

The Decemberists are delicious. Enjoy!

castaways and cutoffs album is still my favorite. and titivillus i agree, legionaire´s lament is their catchiest song
they arent light though ;)
its for mellow moods...

I love the Decemberists. What do you think of the subject matter of their songs? Should rape be the subject of such a rockin' song (The Crane Wife's "The Island" - "The Landlord's Daughter")? Does the high quality of the song justify any content it might have?

I don't think that there is anything wrong with writing a song of rape because I justify it with there wasn't actually rape....in the last part "You'll not feel the drowning" I feel that she was able to overtake the attacker! And ended up killing him...I just kind of feels that way to me....but to each his/her own!

Btw: Love the band!
