I love The Supremes' music -- all of it, every incarnation of them. To me, it represents sunshine, hope, obtaining goals, trying to be and represent the best. I'm happy that in recent years, the public has slowly but surely become more familiar with the post-"Diana Ross" era of the group, appreciating not only the great music these incarnations also made, but likewise the way they symbolized the word "Supreme" by soldiering on, making things work, growing as artists, individuals and performers. (I think this is partly evidenced by the 2000-issued anthology that was titled simply "The Supremes," in recognition of the hits spanning their entire career -- previously, growing up, I remember that if even only one song on a Motown Supremes anthology included Diana Ross, Motown would perfunctorily and automatically attribute the entire disc to "Diana Ross & The Supremes" -- not doing so here, to me, represented the company's shifting recognition of the record-buying public's expanding awareness of The Supremes' entire catalog and lifespan.) Funny, people talk a lot about single "divas" -- like Whitney, Diana, Aretha, Patty, etc. -- but not many ever refer to The Supremes as "The Divas" -- in my book, they were collectively my generation's first group of Divas, and I mean that in a positive sense. And my favorite-ever Supremes record: gotta be "Up The Ladder To The Roof." The record they didn't make which I wish the "girlz" had recorded themselves? "Want Ads" -- oh, how I wish they'd followed their former H-D-H writing-mates to Invictus in the Early '70s: what wonders that combination could've accomplished over there for my fabulous Supremes!!! Love/Touch: Gary :-)
