Well that opinion is certainly one made by someone who doesn't have an appreciation of anything musical that isn't so heavy and loud that the lyrics are undecipherable and pointless. While SMiLE wasn't exactly what the legend would have made you believe, it's just as good but in a different way. It's a slice of the American culture of the time combined with the ingenuity of Brian Wilson. It's certainly a masterpiece as it meets several of its alleged attributes. However, it's up to the listener to decide if it lives up to it's biggest claim,"If Smile had been released in 1967 as it was supposed to, we may have never heard of the Beatles again."

What a great idea to make a discussion board about an album! In this case though, the album truly deserves. Smile is incredible, it actually hasn't been released here yet, but judging from all the outtakes and bits and pieces I've heard (not to mention the MIND BLOWING completed songs like Surfs Up and Heroes & Villians), its a guaranteed masterpiece.
