It was all instrumental with a bebop edge and produced by Quincy Jones. Terrific album. From that album I came to appreciate that Ray was an all around musical genius who, like Louis Armstrong and a few others, saw music as being something not bound by styles or modes but free and universal. Years later at the Chicago Blues Festival I was sitting on the lawn for Ray's set when my pregnant wife reported that she felt the baby move for the first time. Ray had a big band chugging along a mile-wide R&B/gospel groove and my daughter, a big music nut, decided that the groove was irresistable. Following the attacks of September 11th, thousands of Chicagoans and I congregated on Daley Plaza for a moment of silence followed by a muddy recording of Ray singing "America The Beautiful". Very few songs could have possibly captured the moment the way this one did. Good show Ray. Thank you for your genius. You will be missed. >>By obelus You are not logged in.
