>>By skapunker69 (Monday, 27 Oct 2003 18:13)
i saw rancid's new video and i gotta say it sucked. i saw the guy from good charolett on the video. why would rancid hang out with those corporate rock ass clowns. everything they represent is the complete opposite of what i thought rancid was about. i have lost soooooo much respect for rancid not that i had that much to begin with.
>>By aaron m. spears (Saturday, 1 Nov 2003 15:08)
wait a second wait a second! i though punk music was about NOT being mainstream. i guess punk is going down the can when i saw a rancid interview on MTV!!!!!
>>By shankara (Saturday, 1 Nov 2003 16:32)
You people have no brains. Punk is totally the mainstream right now. where the hell have you been? Its on the fucking radio. I love it, its spreading across the world. Who cares who rancid is on mtv. Rancid hangs out with Good Charlotte because they hate punk purists like all you fucking ass holes. Rancid represents unity, peace, honor, and loyalty. Read their interviews, listen to their songs, its as clear as day. Why don't you people go and start thinking for yourselves.
>>By Jonny (Sunday, 2 Nov 2003 08:50)
I agree with Jonny. It seems as though once a punk rock group gets popular, everyone turns against them. Do you want it to stay underground forever? I don't like Rancid's new stuff but I listen to a lot of their old stuff. They still rock but I don't plan on buying their new CD.
>>By so original (Sunday, 2 Nov 2003 15:05)
Thats cool if you don't dig their new stuff, but they are still a great band. I love all their music.
>>By Jonny (Wednesday, 5 Nov 2003 06:31)
i just wanna say this to all u cunts right now. It is fucking good that rancid (and other punk rock) is portrayed more frequently. We get to see more. Punk rock isnt about trying hard to be underground, that just happens by coincidence. It's more fukcing popular now so what.Theres nothing wrong with lots people liking punk, theres nothing wrong with them being on fucking mtv. Theres nothing wrong with them hanging round with good charlotte they're fucking normal people and u can't fucking judge them coz ya dont like their music. I feel sorry for all u cunts who ahev to sit here and judge and spit out shit about every fucking band that isn't as widely liked. Unless ur in a fucking band and making better shit... shut ur fucking mouth. also one other thing. Rancid rules and i dont care wat ne1 says, they're songs actually mean something and they're new cd is good its its great and its culturally and musically worth more than you are Cam
>>By Cam (Friday, 7 Nov 2003 12:53)
Hell yeah, finally somebody with some brains and balls. Good words cam.
I saw Rancid in Vegas. Best show I've seen by them yet. They are fucking incredible. I say, They are the greatest punk band that ever rocked the earth.
>>By Jonny (Saturday, 15 Nov 2003 01:36)
Jonny, I think you have a twisted perspective on what punk is really about. Yes, punk is mainstream now. That's a bad thing. Punk is not meant to be mainstream. Punk can be popular, but not through ways many bands are using. Rancid are hypocrites. They said one thing, and did another. Do you realize why we hate mainstream "punk" bands? It's not because they don't sound punk enough, it's what they represent. They represent everything that punk is supposed to NOT be. Bands like "Simple Plan" consist of grown men, who still complain about their teenage years. I find that pathetic. That's not what punk is about. Punk is a DEFINATE lifestyle, and beleif. Good Charlotte, and other mainstream bands, exploit punk as a fashion, and a fad. Have you ever listened to the Dead Kennedys? To me, they are some of the most die-hard punks ever. They were full of ideas, not a hair-do and a leather jacket. They gave the punk mind, not appearance. It's ok to have the appearance, if you are in that state of mind. They sang about things that contradict these mainstream bands. They turn punk into a mindless stale cartoon. You see, punk fashion was supposed to be a sign of anti-fashion, mainstream pop-punk makes the anti-fashion, a mainstream fashion. It's a huge contradiction, and these people are a part of it. I am very anti-mainstream, because it destroys bands. Rancid is a good example. The mainstream destroyed them. I think it's time for true punks n'skins to speak up agains these bands, it's time to exploit THEM for their hypocracy. It's time to let true punk rise once again. We need to take the fear out of some true punk bands. Nowadays, they are too scared to speak up against the "poseurs".
I think it's ok for a punk band to be popular, I don't think it's ok for them to exploit punk rock for all the wrong reasons. Different styles of punk rock is a good thing, but it's time to get the ideas in order.
>>By Goatt (Thursday, 1 Jan 2004 06:37)
I'm pretty sure you people in here are confusing punk music as a style, and punk mentality, as an attitude. The former was predated by, and grew out of the latter. The attitude is as old as authority.
To call yourself a punk doesn't neccesarily mean you have to take an anti-corporate, or anti-anything stance. The rubber stamped morals that get blindly applied to "what it means to be punk" dont neccesarily apply universaly. Its all relative and it differs largely by the subject of application.
As such radio/MTV time means something different to all bands. It could be:
1)A goal, where the music is crafted to that end (you know the ones). 2)An indifference with benefits, (great bands like Rancid, RHCP etc.) whereas the music thats crafted is true to heart, and just happens to have popular appeal. 3)A stance to avoid like for NOFX, Fugazi, etc. And it can also be any shade in between these extremes.
So the argument of "selling out" is really a non-argument. Leave it alone already, talk about the music instead. Don't defend someone, and don't accuse someone. If that value is important to you, then don't listen to a band on the radio, or do. I think Rancid's words speak for themselves, they are what they are.
Radio/MTV, what a tool (in the useful sense). If you have something to say, what an avenue to get your message out to millions. The real problem is with Radio/MTV (or the mindless puppys who lap it up, depending on how you look at it): instead of using an avenue that can reach millions to say something meaningful, its used to whine about their ex-girlfriend or how dope their ride is.

who fucking cares if punk is a style the whole thing of punk and prep are stupid i consider punk a type of music and thats it
>>By Jackthepumpkinking (Friday, 2 Jan 2004 01:30)
Punk and prep? You miss the point my friend. Punk is a lifestyle.
I think punk is more definate than that, Distrust.
>>By Goatt (Friday, 2 Jan 2004 06:04)
More definate? Not sure what that means, but if you mean more clearly defined, then by who is it defined? By you?
>>By Distrust (Saturday, 3 Jan 2004 22:53)
rancid rocks.Punk is everything.
>>By manson_is_sexy (Saturday, 3 Jan 2004 22:59)
also Goatt: >Rancid are hypocrites. They said one thing, and did another.
Are you just going to throw that out there without backing it up? You ought to find some type of evidence for this before you make such a strong statement. Maybe then it will carry more weight. Or any weight.
>>By Distrust (Sunday, 4 Jan 2004 02:53)
Because they said they've always said things against MTV, and major record companies. They were against pre-made punk clothes, and now they have their own clothing line.
>>By Goatt (Sunday, 4 Jan 2004 04:27)
punk is a lifestyle my ass punk there is no type of lifestlye everyones lifestyle is different
>>By Jackthepumpkinking (Sunday, 4 Jan 2004 04:28)
when has rancid said things against MTV? Theyve been on MTV for 10 years now! This is nothing new for them.
And major record companies? Like Epitaph and Hellcat? Pre-made clothes? Surprisingly they have better things to talk about then where someone should get their clothing. Where do you come up with this stuff? Without any type of evidence your words are meaningless; a band does not become a "poseur" (your word, not mine) just because YOU decide so.
Because they sing and dress in a certain manner, YOU label them a punk. But YOUR world also says no to the mainstream, so they can't be punk. Hmmm, instead of reconciling this dilemna by loosening your definitions and/or opening your mind to how someone else may view "punk" (I can't even say it now with a straight face) you say that we should "exploit THEM for their hypocracy (sic)". Lets call them poseurs and not listen to them anymore. Yeah. That will exploit them.
I defer to Tool in this matter more than I like to admit: www.geocities.com/ bobagadush/lyrics/aenima.html#hookerwithapenis (all one line)
>>By Distrust (Sunday, 4 Jan 2004 06:41)
I agree with you Distrust, I think you know what your talking about.
From what I have seen, The mainstream position is just something that is being payed attention to. I don't think thats a bad thing. It depends on how the artist or band handles that attention. Goatt, you speak of Simple plan, and how they are grown men complaining about their teenage lives. If you hate mainstream so much, why do you know what Simple Plan is singing about? Besides, if thats what they want to sing about, thats their business. Punk is undefinable. It has no limits. It is definitley a very apparent thing, but too many people fight over it. I say, everyone has their own interpretations on it, and their own expression on it. I think Punk is something that is there for people who can't find their place in the world. Its accepting, so of course it will go in and out of mainstream. And people will always fight over it. I could care less who is listening to it, as long as I have my music, my bands, and my frame of mind, all that is unimportant. Why worry so much about mainstream stuff. It is what it is.
>>By Jonny (Sunday, 4 Jan 2004 09:33)
You can say whatever you want about rancid, but that won't change the fact that you see more people at rancid shows than any other show, and the fans love them. They are loyal to their fans, and to each other. They've been here for a long ass time, and you can criticize them all you want, but you can touch em. They are the best fuckin' band.
>>By Jonny (Friday, 9 Jan 2004 06:26)
both johnny and distrust make really good points....to me its all about the music not the lifestyle you live
>>By Jackthepumpkinking (Friday, 9 Jan 2004 22:43)
cool just started listening to RANCID, because someone gave me the transplants CD, bring it the fuck on
>>By grebo rocker (Tuesday, 13 Jan 2004 21:45)
i think rancid is the best out there.i think transplants rocks to.but blink does rock but they have no talent.ive just gotten into rancid and have their first cd,lets go,and out come the wolves..., and indastructabol and they all rock.i even have a operation ivy cd and they rock.i cant see why people hate rancid.all u plp who say rancid and transplants and all the other bands rancid is involved in can suck my balls.rancids down to earth and they tell it like it is.and their new cd is the best.and the only reason why rancid is friends with blink is because of travis barker (witch is the best drummer out there).
>>By rancid (Sunday, 21 Mar 2004 06:54)
punk rock is a typ of rock that talks about growing up and doing shite.all these other bands just jumped onto the band wagon to look cool and make money.rancids just the opposite.there out there to have fun and live it up and thats just what there doing and all u other poeple are mad because u all think if u have money and u know polpular people then ur not punk.no other band can even compair to rancid so im srry for all u other people who hate rancid because ur missing out on a fucking bad ass band.also rancid isnt in it for themselves.in case u havent notice there out there helping other bands get started because there cool poeple and they want to see some pople have fun.and if u still think rancids in it for the money then why the hell are they helping other bands get started?if their in it for the money they wouldnt help other bands because then people might like them better and not buy rancids music.so that proves that their just there to have fun and if there making money along the way then hell take it.if that was u then u know u would take it.and if theres any rancid fans who want to get into more rancid music then deffently get TRANSPLANTS.good band to get into.
>>By rancid (Sunday, 21 Mar 2004 08:56)
I fuckin hat all these guys who suddenly hate a band cuz they "sold out" What the hell's that all about?I mean,it just means they are more accesible to mainstream audiences and as long as they stay true to their roots, it's all good.RANCID aren't in the same league as all those pop-punkers like Good Charlotte and Blink 182 to name just a few-RANCID rule, they are serious punksters with ambition and integrity.Ever since I heard the first stuttering, sneering vocals of Tim, I knew this was a band I would love. Viva La Punx!
