If you wanna play as fast as Matt, play with a pick... that's what he does. Playing bass with your fingers is slower and won't give you that nice punchy sound that a pick will. Plus, playing with your fingers makes you look like a geek :).

"Use a pick. If you play slap bass you need your fingers broken." - Buddyhead Rules of Rock.

Rancid has signed to Warner Brothers. I bet they feel silly about not signing like… 10 years ago when they probably coulda gotten 5 times as much money, and then not look like total hypocrites years later for waving the “we will never sign to a major label… PUNK ROCK!” flag. Funny shit, dude.

i dont know if this is a European or US site, but im from Australia. I ran into Frenzal Rhomb (aussie punk shits over the rest any day) at the air port the other day. i was chatting to Jay the lead singer and asked if rancid were planning on coming to Australia and play at an umcomming festival that Frenzal are also announcede for. Jay said, ' i don't think so Tims dead!' What the fuck... he said he wasn't kidding and he would never joke bout something like that... who'd joke bout that right??? he said something about heroin.... Any way i don't wunna be spredding sick rumours, and i cant find out the truth?
So i hope Tim is safe because RANCID ARE MY HERO'S! Matt plays the best bass line i have ever heard an why hasn't any body made mention of Brett yet? the drummer is always teh forgotten member, he's a fucking ledgend!
Long live Rancid and lets hope Warner dosent change the way they play!!?

Even though nobody listens to it anymore, the original '93 self-titled album was the most honest, raw, and driving album they produced. Everything has it's cycles and the '00 self-titled got back to the original sound with more refined mixing. As Rancid is getting older, they are also getting a lot smarter. They were geniuses ten years ago and have evolved to a point where an indy label simply can't produce the sounds they need. The producer (Gurewitz) is going with them the make sure it's still done right.

On a side note:
Rancid has been probably the most accepting punk rockers of other styles, whether completely different genres or brands of punk. The use of Raggae, Blues, Rap, Jazz, Slow and Hard Rock, on the past five albums (not to mention everything in side projects) is prime example of this.
"Punk" is to do your thing and not let others force you into theirs. But it's also having the appreciation for what other things are about. Music is music. There should be no arguments over who is better than who. Catch-22 once said at a show, "There's a lot of different bands here tonight. Unity is what makes the scene stronger. Let's ALL have a good time." Unity, people, is the most important part. Unity is what you've lost if you're sitting here arguing about who the sellouts are and who's punk. Let's get back to it.

whats happenin to Lint. i cant believe hes doing that transplants stuff. I must say i lost a lot of respect for him. I really miss the Operation Ivy days, but rancid is really good too. Im just pissed off that i see a bunch of 9 year olds in rancid shirts, and that they signed to warner brothers. And what really pisses me off is that Benjo fuck is in their new video, i fuckin hate good charlotte, they could go to hell with all those other pop-punk bands. Anyway, i got every rancid albumm on vinyl, so i preordered this one to keep the collection going, i hope its good. See ya in the pit.

>>By LarsFredericksen   (Thursday, 3 Jul 2003 17:21)

Charlatan! If you miss the good-old days of Operation Ivy, of UNITY, you wouldn't be knocking anyone. Anybody can throw around "Lint", call themselves "Lars", own all the vinyls, and say they'll "See ya in the pit". That doesn't mean you get it. I stop and talk to nine year olds all the time (I work in a school) and THEY understand there's a difference in the music and appreciate all the aspects of punk, punk rock, hardcore, ska-core, pop-punk, acid punk, ska-punk, rock & roll, blues, and jazz and know it's all intertwined.

Hey, here's a radical idea: "pop" is the abbreviated "popular". (They started using it in the '20s to describe swing and crooning songs.) "Pop-whatever" means the current trend in whatever genre. Rancid has been the most influential, sought-after, idolized, bought, stolen, copied, burned, however you get it, punk rock band in ten years. Rancid is the first "pop-punk" band. All these arguments against bands are pissing contests of 'I got here first and I'm better.' It's god damned ridiculous.

I'd rather hang with a pop fan who knows what they like rather than anyone who knows what they hate.

Rock on! everyone here should listen to what mohawk is saying, he gets it and you guys sitting around squabbling over all this silly shit could definitly learn something here!

>>By Just a Fan   (Friday, 4 Jul 2003 04:09)

They didn't actually sign onto the Warner Bros label, they just cut a deal where Warner Bros will help promote the album. The Warner Bros logo will not appear on the cd, they are still on Epitaph/Hellcat.

>>By mike   (Saturday, 5 Jul 2003 06:25)

rancid are a shite pile of shite. wimpy watered down punk for yanks! go listen to crass, melon-heads!

>>By shane!   (Sunday, 6 Jul 2003 16:20)

See, that's the same stupid argument that the others put up, just another band who YOU think is better. I listen to Crass, too. It's a different style of punk. I listen to Rancid. It's a different style of punk. I listen to Lagwagon. It's a different style of punk. I listen to Anti-Flag. It's a different style of punk. I listen to Bouncing Souls. It's a different style of punk. I listen to Living End. It's a different style of punk. The list goes on and on. You can't listen to one band alone. That'd be pretty closed-minded.

If you went to a restaurant and ordered a cheeseburger and someone else ordered a steak, would you fight over whose was better? No. Because it's fucking stupid. They're not only both food, they're both meat and two different types at that. These bands are not only music, they're all punk. Different types of punk, yea. But who cares. Sometimes I want a cheeseburger and sometimes I want a steak. Sometimes I wanna riot. Sometimes I don't.

rancid is the greatest punk band of all time, i cant wait to hear the new cd.there was this message that some fucker wrote(mohawk mania) he said that rancid was the first pop-punk band, thats bullshit, fuck poppunk, thats blink 182, dont get me wrong i dont believe for one second that blink are posers, its the attitude, punk is a lifestyle, not fashion style, so fuck that.
from trever, the only fan that would ever matter

>>By shane fucker   (Wednesday, 9 Jul 2003 01:02)

I have a reversed mullet. my hair stopped growing in the back and i never cut it. I'm balding from the neck up.
alright back to it tough guys.

>>By genius gene   (Wednesday, 9 Jul 2003 01:39)

Thanks, Gene.
I think trevor missed my point. Yes, blink is pop punk and so are a hundred other bands right now. But what was popular in the punk scene eight or ten years ago? How many people own Out Come the Wolves? Most of the people I know, if they don't own the album, have at least heard and know songs from it. Ruby Soho was played on mtv an awful lot. The Saturday Night Live performance boosted popularity. People who didn't normally listen to punk were at least hearing it. Exposure to that degree AT THAT TIME was unheard of except, and this is a BIG maybe, the Ramones before them. But that can be argued as YET ANOTHER brand of punk seperate to this, just as current pop punk bands are a brand seperate to Rancid.
"Pop" is specific to the time which it is mentioned. The pop now is a whole lot different than the pop then. Better or worse, I don't care. The point was that it shouldn't matter. Music is music. You can love it or hate it. But how can you compare it? How can you say 'I'm better than you because I like this?'

"There's a lot of different bands here tonight. UNITY is what makes the scene stronger. Let's ALL have a good time." -Catch-22

>>By Mohawk Mania   (Wednesday, 9 Jul 2003 06:47)

mohawk. noboby wants your fucking hippy ideas of unity. if this was the days of sid vicious, you would be the exact opposite of a punk in his eyes. so think of it that way. and how DARE you compare the ramones to blink 182? but i DO see your point. im not as narrow minded as you think. however if your THAT hard, come over to BELFAST CITY! believe me, if you're a hard man in new york, you're a pussy in BELFAST!!!!!

peace and harmony sucks

>>By shane!   (Wednesday, 9 Jul 2003 22:32)

Sid Vicious lived to 21 for a reason.

>>By Mohawk Mania   (Wednesday, 9 Jul 2003 23:46)

rancid ROX like hell i love there cds and there songs ofcourse well neways good luck on ur next cd boyz

>>By AXELiOn   (Thursday, 10 Jul 2003 03:11)

I think mohawk has a very good point, music is music. I figured this out a while back when I went to a show and some kid was naming off a lot of bands I had never heard of. For some reason that made me feel small. Then later that night I realized that it didn't matter. The music you know, the music you love is almost like the place where you grew up. I mean you could look down on someone because they aren't from some big city where you see all these great bands at local venues. But that would be like looking down on someone for liking blink 182. And that would be like looking down on someone because they are just plain different. There is no point in arguing over opinions. I personally enjoy rancid I started listening to them a long while back but never really got into it. Then my dad gave me one of his bass guitars and before I knew it I was playing detroit. And now I drop my jaw in amazement when I hear some of the things that guy pulls off. I play music a lot with my friends. I play because I love doing it, and if I could get paid for doing it I wouldn't stop. I envy the guys in rancid just as much as I envy the guys in Blink 182. Two different styles of music, but they are all doing what they love and living off of it. That's more than I can say for myself and a lot of the people I know.
