Yay, Matthew Fisher's finally won credit for co-writing A Whiter Shade Of Pale. He's 60. Could still give him a nice pension though.

It seems to me most of the bands that have been really successful in the long-term have agreed beforehand how the writing credits/earnings should be split so that it doesn't become an issue... Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Queen (a four-way split after they got fed up with arguing whose songs shoould be released!), U2 and REM have always had a straight four-way split... hmmmm

I think it is a strange ruling in that Fisher gets (I think) 40% of copyright earnings FROM NOW ON. Only 30yrs worth you missed out on then Matt! Gary Fisher has said he intends to appeal... this may well run and run.... mind you all this publicity must be generating PRS and MCPS earnings for 'em ;)

Needless to say WSOP is a gem, and for my money the destinctive organ part deserves some share of the composition. Now let's see when the bassist and the drummer file their claims... "Where there's a hit there's a writ" ;)

If Brooker & Reid, or any other established songwriting partnership, wanted to be slavish about these things, they could brazenly declare from the onset, "Right, all the songwriting comes from us, don't any of you others add or suggest anything else, 'cos we're the writers & we're gonna ignore you!"

Doesn't work like that, does it? Fisher came up with an arresting intro, etc & messrs Brooker & Reid just couldn't ignore it. Herein is the fallibility of these working-partnerships.
Hi, Al & Lloydy by the way!

The vote here goes to "A Salty Dog" as their best & most varied & accessible album.
