It's not that I dislike this sound, as a matter of fact I quite like a couple of bands like Lali Puna and Mum, but it doesn't really get me excited. It makes for good driving music though!

I get your point. I often put Lali Puna, MUM or styrofoam when I have to do some work on the house. And if I had it on Cd, I owuld probably be listening to it whilst doing the shopping. To me it has this spring vibe over it... even though it is not always happy music, makes me wanna clean and throw all the windows open to hear the birds sing (which is impossible the level I put my stereo, but it's the idea......)

My photography teacher used to play their "Give Up" album during classtime. Now I'm hooked.

Oh man... here I go blowing money on a cd again. "Give Up" did exactly that. Sure, a lot of friends have the cd, but a lot of people liked Whitesnake too... it doesn't make it right. Ok, here's my problem exactly: I'm sick and tired of 14 year old lead singers that seem like they are going to "talk sing" through a whole album. If he tries to high or low... something snaps. No, it's not cute anymore. It's getting tedious. Thom York, Bright Eyes, and maybe even Pedro the Lion can get away with it... but not Gibbard.
I'm sticking the whole emo-alt boy-singer-ilk firmly on their shoulders. The music (sans singer) is interesting at best, and I like my Plaid, Broken Social Scene, and Dntel. But just trying to listen to it, I have to block out that kid rambling. Didn't they even think about what it would sound like?!
[ It seemed kind of effortless," says Tamborello, who had never met Gibbard before the recording of "Evan and Chan." "He came down and sang it once and we were just really happy with it." ]
Oh.. guess not. I've passed gas with more effort.
