Discussion: Phyllis Hyman

Phyllis was perhaps the most talented song stylist of our generation, and sadly very much under appreciated. Her voice was so unique that no one could justifiably duplicate it. Many, and I do many have tried, but admittedly, some have acknowledge that her style, her intensity and inflection are difficult to master. She was by far a one of a kind. When she was dubbed "Sophisticated Lady" it was no joke. Her stage presence was considered to be regal. Although personally, I had never had the opportunity to see her live, I have seen her on DVD in Sophisticated Ladies and her stage presence is real. She does command attention and gets it. Being on stage was like second nature for her.

It is a shame that her talents weren't appreciated more. Its only since her passing that some acknowledge her for the true talent that she was.
