We would like to invite the fans to come out before or after the show and enjoy our happy hour with $2 drinks (4-7) on our new patio. Metallica are great, no doubt about that. Along with Slayer, they literally invented speed metal ... and when Slayer continued the speed and what not , Metallica focused on great solos and the like . So, considering their awesome music, skill, their history, their making history, and just being Metallica , i still have to say this: What is with "St. Anger" ? I mean, the title, and even perhaps the cover, could be recognised as metallica's , but whats with the music inside? Fair enough they , like every other band grow and develop, progress even, and fair enough (lets admit it) they're musical sluts as far as their music goes ( covers etc....which are pretty damn excellent) , but i don't get this new stuff. They sound like a new band, just starting out , that have just bought their instruments and/but haven't yet learned to play, just learning to find their feet. But, worse, they sound like a (sorry to the Metallica and s.o.a.d) wannabe system of a down cover/tribute band. :( Their new album may/might grow on me yet, but still, there you go, my 2 cents for now.

On that new Metallica single, is it just me, or is bad snare and vocal all you can hear?
What the fuck is going on there? 9 minute songs with no wanky solos? This shit ain’t metal.

Metallica:

You are sellouts. I will never pay for your music again. I hope you fade away, as you should. What the hell is St. Anger anyway... terrible.

>>By toss_wank   (Friday, 1 Aug 2003 01:42)

NO,NO,NO,NO,NO,NO,NO,NO!
Whats going on? Fifty foot square snare drum, gay vocals. Where is the anger?
Don't go back to your roots if the passion is no longer their.
It allways ends up crap.
And why does every song start off so promising, huge heavy riffs, everyones getting into it and
then............plinkerty plonk.... plinkerty plonk.
Absolute rubbish.

Hey i thought St. Anger was pure Scrappy metal Shit when i heard it first but now it's growin on me. Yea granted there are no solos but they've taken a new direction and their music is more Raw now, i like that. It's not their best album (master of Puppets, Kill em all, and justice for all) but their new shit IS credible. Frantic is one good song on the Album, i'm not too crazy about St. Anger, it's a bit pretentious. I'm still goin to see them in concert and i know they're gonna blow the roof and that's what heavy metal is all about.

PS: how can anyone say the Black lbum is one of their favourite All time Metallica albums? Before the Black Album Metallica fans had respect, when it was released it made Metallica look soft. In my opinion the black album is filled with songs that only wannabe Rock chicks like Avril Lavigne would like.

>>By Too Smart for a nickname   (Friday, 15 Aug 2003 08:10)

Ok anybody who thinks Metallica have lost it can shove it up their Asses. I went to see them live last night in Dublin& they rocked beyond belief. Yes, granted they played 2 of the songs off the new album and they weren't great live (Frantic& St. Anger) But they played their old better stuff such as Battery, Enter Sandman, Nothin else matters, Orion, Master of Puppets Sad but true etc and they were amazing. They played "One" so well it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, excellent.
Everybody who has given up on Metallica based on their new stuff should just go Fuck themselves because yeah the new music's not great but they're still Metallica and they can still Blow the Amps wherever or whenever they play. James Hetfield even said that him and the band were grateful that the fans have stuck by them. Which proves that the band themselves were'nt too pleased with their St. Anger stuff and also they only played the 2 songs off the album. ( i would have liked them to play dirty window, it's a good song)
Kirk Hammet was amazing as always, as was Robert Trujillo who played some killer Bass solos. Lars is a wank stain but you gotta hand it to the man he can Drum and James Hetfield was Killer as Usual!
They're the Shit.

>>By Too Smart for a nickname   (Thursday, 21 Aug 2003 09:19)

I just don't understand why everyone is so blown away by Kirk Hammet. To me he just isn't that great of a guitar play. Guitar players who are better than Kirk Hammer. Joe Satriani(Kirk Hammet's guitar teacher), Steve Vai(also a pupil of Satriani), Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vauguan, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Frank Zappa, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, Robert Fripp, Nuni Bettencourt, Jeff Beck, Dimebag Darryl, Korn, Jimmy Page.....................Man I could keep on writing this shit for days..........Dickie Betts, Eric Johnson, Keith Richards, Joe Pass, David Gilmore, Hell Even Yngwie has a better sense of style than Kirk Hammet and that's REALLY, REALLY, REALLY BAD

I mean I really don't get it. What the hell if so freaking cool about this guy. What can he really do on the guitar but play a bunch of notes on the guitar that sound out of tune really fast? If I'm gonna listen to fast out of tune notes I'd rather hear John Mclaughlin. Oh Yea, George Harrison and Alan Holdsworth are also better guitar players than Kirk.......................................Peach

mettalica is good but their really really old

The only way to tell objectively which of Metallica's albums are the best. (Scientifically:)

Get a statistically signifcant (p < 0.05) population of people who have never heard a Metallica album or album review in their life.

Get them to rate /5 stars each and every album from Kill 'Em All to St. Anger.

The problem this raises is that it will turn out to be a democracy of popular opinion like the music charts (Top xxx). To review Metallica one should have a keen acumen for the genre of heavy metal in the first place (or at least a open minded appreciation of every genre), the conundrum being that what person who has an interest in metal has not heard a Metallica song/album before? Very view I imagine.

Ride the Lightning (produced by Metallica)
MOP (produced by Metallica; Flemming Rasmussen)
...AJFA (produced by Metallica; Flemming Rasmussen)

Metallica should either bring back Flemming Rasmussen or produce the next album themself. What do you reckon?

I've always believed you should have as few intellectual contributors as possible to the arts. When you start getting producers to produce something it's not really Metallica producing it anymore is it? The producer is having their influence, their 2c on the album. The same could be said about movies. I liked Bulworth because Warren Beatty wrote the script, acted the lead role and directed it. I wondered why on a holistic level I enjoyed it so much and why Warren's acting was so good. It was only afterwards when looking at the credits I realised he was responsible for 3 of the main areas of the movie.

I don't purport to know Metallica. But my theory is they don't have as much intellectual control over themselves (i.e. over the end product of the sound/length/harmonics on their albums). They need to go back to the early days when they did all the song writing AND soundmaking themselves. I imagine since they have so much money these days the question from their point of view is Why do it yourself when you can pay someone else to do it? Maybe Bob Rock's passivist
style is good for Metallica (I haven't listened to St. Anger yet).

i like their song st anger...
it's a good song...

>>By Nikki_12   (Thursday, 28 Aug 2003 15:42)

like metallica

>>By eva__Tier   (Monday, 29 Sep 2003 14:38)

With the song St. Anger, I get the feeling that metallica have been listening to System of a Down, and want to be wild and reckless like 15 years ago... but they are not that young anymore, so they don't rock that hard........
Though I like the song, better then the shit they have been doing on the last two albums...

>>By Campking   (Monday, 29 Sep 2003 14:43)

Metallica are Gods of Music all their albums should be appreciated even the new St Anger
I like their new style. Metallica will always be remembered, kirk hammet is no doubt a guitar god. Kirk rox and so does the band.

>>By dickey561   (Sunday, 12 Oct 2003 03:00)

Tupac? that guy got killed (and thank God for that). That last guy was on serious crack. Any way...
I respect the new album but i also hate it, and hope i only see another copy in the fires of hell. Really, what is wrong with the world? Metallica was a Godly band at a time, but latley, i have been smelling a new air. What's that? Smells like SELLING OUT TO ME!!!

Listen to some Manowar, drink a cold Pepsi, and burn(as in destroy) the new Metallica CD.

I like some of Metallica's songs. I'm not really a Metallica fan but the song "fade to black" helps me when I'm feeling depressed. I can really relate to the lyrics.

>>By Knoxville grl   (Tuesday, 4 Nov 2003 19:03)

Yeah fuck Ride The Lightning is good when you're going crazy. And indeed Fade to Black when you're depressed....

[gothic:
of or relating to a style of fiction characterized by the use of desolate or remote settings and macabre, mysterious, or violent incidents]

What ever happened to goth music? Is Marilyn Manson the last goth rocker left?

Metallica used to have some good goth stuff. "Creeping Death" (From RTL), "The Thing That Should Not Be" (MoP) - even "Enter Sandman" had elements of it; but now they don't do that anymore because I assume they think they're all grown up and mature now (OK I haven't got anything past the Black album so I'm assuming a lot there as well). But it's not immature to write goth music. Gothic imagery is a great metaphor for depression, suffering, anger and violence. Everyone goes through this sometime in their life. Some of the best music relates to how you already feel. If nothing else, gothic themes as long as they're not too cliched, can be great pieces of creativity to rock to.

Bring back the goth.

>>By ftad   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 03:39)

Goth may come back but only fo a while because it is literally a self destroying thing. Goths kill themselves after all
