The acclaimed guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani was born in New York in 1956, but first established himself on the San Francisco music scene during the early 1980s. Satriani became one of the most recognized guitar teachers in the area, inspiring pupils such as Kirk Hammett (later of Metallica), Larry LaLonde (later of Primus) and Steve Vai (now an acclaimed solo guitarist in his own right).

Satriani did not begin recording until 1984, when he released a now out-of-print self-titled EP. Signing to Relativity, in 1986 he released his full-length solo debut Not of This Earth, a set of tracks that highlighted the young guitarist's amazing technical ability with complex hard rock instrumental epics. Satriani's popularity expanded with his 1987 follow-up, Surfing with the Alien, one of the few all-instrumental albums to ever reach the Top 40. Satriani became known as a "guitar player's guitar player," influencing countless hobbyists and professionals with his innovative style and sure-fingered playing.

After issuing the 1988 mini-album Dreaming No. 11, recorded with legendary bassist Stu Hamm, Satriani released his next full-length, 1989's Flying in a Blue Dream, which introduced vocals. 1992's The Extremist was followed by a double-disc 1993 retrospective, Time Machine. Satriani worked with the famous hard rock producer Glyn Johns on a 1995 eponymous album before moving on to a series of tours with other top guitarist known as "G3."

Joe satriani is the reason I started to play guitar. I remember hearing "A train of Angels" and feeling the music run through my heart and vains. His melodic dream shreading and slow romantic ballads is what I love about him. I'm a single fan but his music reaches every heart that appreciates the guitar in all it's glory.

I have been playing guitar since 1968 and struggling with modes, scales, theory, arrangements, etc.
Then in 2001 a friend turned me on to "Flying in A Blue Dream".
As I started learning (by ear) "Back to Shalla-Bal", much of what I had been studying came together and the big picture got much clearer.
I then obtained the "Surfing with The Alien", and "Joe Satriani Guitar Secrets" publications.
To say that I learned a lot is an understatement, I now have a whole new approach to music, learning, practice, Zen of the Guitar, and the lifelong pursuit of music.
Thank you Joe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Satriani's main influence was Jimi Hendrix (although he doesn't sound like Hendrix at all). Satriani was around 13/14 years old and was in the football team for his school when Hendrix died, when he found out about Hendrix's death he asked his coach if he could quit the team so he could take up guitar. I guess he thought he could be the next Hendrix, what's strange there is that he is the next Hendrix !

My biggest influence by far and easily the best technical guitarist out there. If your saying that Vai is the best technical player in the world think again, Satch taught Vai.

Satch plays everything from quiet melodies (Always With You, Always With Me) , which are still masterful, to heavy riffs with screaming, in-your-face lead parts (Mind Storm).

He plays the rocky blues (Big Bad Moon) and some scary stuff (Back To Shalla-Bal and Circles). I can't seem to find anything he doesn't play !

If you play lead guitar - this guy should be one of your bigger influences, if not...you suck !

I have been playing now for the past 24 years, I am now 30.
I first heard joes playing on his first album and was stunned.
If your looking for a guitar god , well you have found him. There will only ever be one Satch.
I have now mastered every piece by Joe, and it has taken me 10 years.!
I met Joe at the LA NAMM show back in 2000,and now have every signature guitar released by the man himself .

Thank you JOE

I first hear Joe when I went into a record store and they were playing Flying in a blue dream. I immediatly bought the tape and left. Listening to his music made me want to play guitar and every album he puts out gives me that rush all over again. I only use his series of guitars, and I am now a full time lead guitarist for a gospel group all thanks to the immiediate addiction that I had when I heard the power of what Joe puts into his music. Thank you Joe, you influence all types of people! YOU DA MAN!

Joe Satriani is the best guitar player on the world. Vec godinama slusam njegovu glazbu i oduševljen sam njegovim umjecem. Volio bih ga upoznati jer ga smatram posebnom osobom. Citao sam o njemu sve sto mi je doslo pod ruku (i oko). Nevjerojatno; jednostavno i genijalno. Album Engines of Creation ni danas ne mogu skuziti, ali on vjerojatno zna što je s njim htio reci. Najdrazi mi je album Joe Satriani, gdje je zvuk svoje gitare doveo do savrsenstva. Ljudi, slusajte Satriania!!!!! On je kralj gitare!!!!

I've heard (self-proclaimed) guitar players call Joe's music "textbook". It must be jealousy! If you have ever seen Joe play and you know one lick about guitar, there is no way you could make that claim. My first Joe concert blew me away, and i've been to HUNDREDS of concerts. To watch Joe in concert is to watch a music god create. He is truly amazing. If i ever get married again, i'm playing "Love Thing" as my theme song. Joe, i carry your music in my heart and it speaks to my soul... THANK YOU!

>>By EFE   (Tuesday, 4 Mar 2003 04:01)

Joe's playing has influenced me in ways unimaginable...
When I was 2, I heard Flying In A Blue Dream, and hands down, without a shadow of a doubt I knew I wanted to play guitar...hes my inspiration, and the reason I play now...
I've been playing guitar 2 years now, and by comparison to many of the fans above, I am stil a pup...but I'm learnin' my theory, and I play Gibson...
He is my, and should be everybody that plays guitar's, God!

I been playing for 5 years now and I haven't really been able to recognise a musical influence in any of the music that I have listen to.
A few months ago I bought a tabulature mag which had 'Satch Boogie',
I listened to it and thought thats cool, I still havent learned it today.I then got another of these mags the over day which contained 'Starry Night',when I heard this I knew I had fallen in love with Joe's guitar work.I can now just about play the first parts of the two pieces(obviously not as fast as Joe) and have decided that Joe Satriani is my influence and I think any good guitarist must respect him for his amazing talent.
He's a great guitarist in his own right JOE SATRIANI !
