Emo

i really dont see the deal with emo... someone on the first page said emo stood for emotional music why the hell is emo any more emotional than other great bands that arnt emo? To me it doesnt sound emotional at all...il admit i probably do like a couple of emo bands.. (but i dnt regard them as emo someone else might)... emo is an insult... they set up their own genre and the name emo suggests that its the only one thats emotional?
Emo kids piss me off and they are the reason alot of alternatives get bullied or whatever from my experience. Emo has become a brain washing cult! every one around em seems to be turning emo and its stupid... why? whats the point? whats the appeal?
the fact of the matter is if you listen to emo there is very little emotion in alot of it (there are bound to be exceptions but as a whole it sucks).
i hate emo it irritates the hell out of me.

I think Michael Jackson is EMO!
>>By thom (Sunday, 30 Apr 2006 23:18)
as far as i have observed its a pale imitation of goth
>>By scarletnikki (Monday, 1 May 2006 12:22)
"they are the reason alot of alternatives get bullied" - definitely goth
>>By Sk8a H8a (Monday, 1 May 2006 13:18)
well, i started being a "goth" post punk before it was actually called goth and apart from other things it was a backlash against bullies
>>By scarletnikki (Monday, 1 May 2006 21:54)
I'm pretty much a fan of emo ... although I'm going to have to agree with spookygoth in some parts like, its no more emotional than other music, and I don't consider most of the bands I listen to to be emo, even though many do ... I mean ... along the side of my screen is advertisements for Panic! At the Disco, I consider them more like dance punk ... Fall Out Boy, pop punk ... All-American Rejects, ok, so they're definitely emo, but I love them anyway ... and since when has Avenged Sevenfold been emo? I don't like them at all, but I just never thought they were emo, I never considered Modest Mouse, Weezer, or Coheed and Cambria emo either. Oh well, is there actually one definite definition for emo? Haha.
>>By Wednesday (Tuesday, 2 May 2006 00:56)
the emo virus is spreading!!! avenged sevenfold?????!!!!!!!
>>By scarletnikki (Tuesday, 2 May 2006 10:26)
emo is spreading but it will die out like most weak fads do... i mean you got your basic strong influential type people ... punks and goths that have been going for years and years.... then you have the types that seem to die out quite quick as a new one comes in... such as "moshers" god i havent heard of them for awhile and yet a couple of years back thats all i ever heard about mosher music this and mosher clothes that... thats what emos going to be like... people are going mad for emo now... just wait til something new comes along and every emo loving muppet is going to fade away with it..
>>By spookygoth (Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:18)
I've never heard of 'mosher' as a kind of person. Moshing is just what people do at concerts.
Either way, I think emo bands are really just a bunch of bands that a certain kind of person listens to, and it's the same kind of person who dyes their hair black and yello/red/whatever and wears emo clothes and has emo friends and eats emo breakfast cereal.
Hey my brother told me he was hanging around with his friends and a bunch of emo kids were hanging around nearby, and my brother's conversation went quiet and in the lull everyone heard this emo girl go 'So what do you cut with?'
I laughed hard at that.
>>By Flagg (Wednesday, 3 May 2006 01:00)
ye around here when i was in school and just starting college 'moshers' were like public enemy number 1 for chavs... they did the same thing as emos but dressed different and didnt listen to emo music... they were mainly 13 - 14 year old slipknot obsessives... and im not saying slipknot are bad coz i like em but they certainly arnt the best band alive.. And they wore baggies and hoodies all the time and thought it was cool to try suicide and cut them selves... i was friends with afew of em but they didnt half get me into some trouble.. they used to rob stuff from shops and cut themselves up in public after getting hight off some poppers... was pretty gay shit really
emo sounds very similar in that respect looking at what youve said..
>>By spookygoth (Wednesday, 3 May 2006 11:30)
oops getting high even. was in a rush this morning
>>By spookygoth (Wednesday, 3 May 2006 19:41)
and yet emo must have been around for years and its only recently I have been aware of it!!!!
>>By scarletnikki (Wednesday, 3 May 2006 20:13)
I've also never been aware of "mosher" as a type of person... I love to mosh at concerts and would therefore define myself as a mosher - I wear hoodies ALL the time, too... but I'm 18, don't steal, cut or do drugs or even listen to Slipknot and I certainly don't mosh because I think it's "cool"... You can't compare moshers to emos in that respect, because a mosher is defined as someone who moshes, whereas an emo is some fool with black and yellow hair and a myspace...
>>By Sk8a H8a (Thursday, 4 May 2006 23:43)
hahahaha
>>By scarletnikki (Friday, 5 May 2006 20:08)
haha and a myspace... i think you misunderstand. I mean they are similar in that respect becoz just like moshers (which seems to have been just a round here thing by the looks of it but we did have moshers here until emo came about) its a stupid phase that will eventually fuck off somewhere else and then be replaced with something even more stupid.
I wear hoodies im nearly 20 i mosh all the time and i do listen to slipknot now and then, but im not a mosher as in the type of person, (i think youd have had to have been in manchester when it was big to understand what i mean by one though i dont simply mean someone who can mosh, mosher was a term that seems to have been given to them). I dont steal, i dont do drugs or cut myself up because its cool too or whatever there daranged reason was.
I never used to mind them until one of my friends (who was a mosher and a "devil worshipper" to apparently) came into school afew times and said alot of shit about alot of people and forced a nail into her wrist in class. She used to tell people were mum and dad battered the hell out of her...... turned out she was wrong since her dad was never home and her mum was dying of cancer... i couldnt believe she said those things when they werent true at all, and alot of the little bastards did say stuff like that....
Looks like emo is going that way too is all im saying, which i guess is why i hate emos... coz i saw the stupid phase that came before them and they did nothing but cause trouble.
>>By spookygoth (Saturday, 6 May 2006 13:24)
Weeell, I never think of emos and anti-social little shits... they don't seem to bear any resemblance to your description of moshers, certainly... Most of them are over 14, for a start! Emos are just annoying because of their infuriating presence which stinks of conformity - it's one thing to be a part of the system, but turning it into a stupid fashion trend is just annoying... Therefore I tend to think of emos as stupid rather than evil... they think they're cool and technically they're not forcing anyone else to do it, but they fill their surroundings and music stations with their irritating cult which can't be avoided, no matter how hard you try As for that idiotic devil-worshipping thing, I find it hugely aggrivating that people who say stuff like that ruin the reputation of others - my best friend (http://www.flork.com/der+gothmann.html) is a Goth and he takes it very seriously - personally I consider myself a Goth too but unlike him I don't dress in the traditional gothic manner... but they say it's just a mindset, right? However, people have accused him of worshipping the devil for no other apparent reason than A) he wears black B) he wears eyeliner - in reality he's a very very intelligent person and I reckon you have to be really stupid or just insane to worship Satan... If emos weren't a recognised cult with very transparent beliefs ("make token attempts to appear unhappy and full of angst, when actually they're part of a scene and they're always at parties and have shitloads of friends" [Flagg] and copy your fellow emos in every conceivable way, following the instructions of the media telling you how to be cool), they'd probably be accused of worshipping Satan too - I think we all know that Goths are labelled as Satanists because only a minority of outsiders understand them and the government can't control them through media influences like emos, so they spread the image of devil-worshippers and so isolate anyone who might seriously oppose them... ironically, people like spookygoth's friend proliferate the devil-worshipping image by adopting it to be "cool" by supposedly rebelling when all they're really doing is creating a front with the authority-prescribed rebel image... how stupid is that?
>>By Sk8a H8a (Saturday, 6 May 2006 14:20)
no i know emos arent all 14 year old anti social half wits and not saying they do all the same stuff moshers do (or at least not trying to say that) but i was mainly refering to what flagg said....."everyone heard this emo girl go 'So what do you cut with?'" it just reminded me so much of moshers thinking it was hardcore to cut themselves up. that and just like with moshers emo will die a death and a new bunch of lost sheep will take up some kind of image.
i dont think emos are evil ha no they are just idiots. I cant stand the zombie sheep type people they do my head in are people really that stupid that they cant think of how to dress themselves there own way? I consider myself a goth and i know that goth has recently been tainted with the same kind of following twats but i add my own sort of zest to it...your right it is just a state of mind type thing, the image is to be interpreted by the person doing it, on the whole its a rebellion against the so called 'normal' and by dressing like that your making a statement that normal is a crock... but other people have other dieas about it too... like i said it all depends on the person. I got refered to as a devil worshipper loads. (partly becoz that knob head friend of mine sprouted the idea and then since i was her mate i got the back lash for it). the way the system works with shit like this is crap.
>>By spookygoth (Sunday, 7 May 2006 13:52)
The reason I mentioned the age thing is that since a few years ago there were 13/14-year-old moshers and now there are 16-18-year-old emos, can it be assumed that a lot of these are in fact the same people? So effectively they never really dropped the trend; they just changed it... however this time there seem to be even more of them because these things just pick up more people each time who wanna be cool - the majority of young people in the country seem to be following some stupid trend that prevents them from taking the world seriously and their number is growing, allowing everyone to by manipulated by those in power - I'm fed up of people who just let this happen
>>By Sk8a H8a (Sunday, 7 May 2006 15:25)
yes, its like which category shall we fall into. without any thought at all, and just happening to be into something because you really relate to it.... a lot of people find it hard to find their own way, its easier to latch on or copy.
>>By scarletnikki (Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:11)
That's exactly the way I feel about organised religion
>>By Sk8a H8a (Monday, 8 May 2006 16:14)
very true. thats all about control.........
>>By scarletnikki (Tuesday, 9 May 2006 10:48)
ye i guess its possible that they have changed... but we still get moshers around here from time to time and while i said 14 year olds thats generally how old they are, but of course there are older ones and younger ones.... generally they are 14 to 15 years old but some are older so in that respect it cant have changed because the previous image is still kicking about.
I hate organised religion, i hate the sheep generation... i hate how fashion and media dictate how people should look... for example it would seem polka dots are in this season so i all i fuckin see everywhere now is polka dots. Its stupid. Emo is just the same someone dictates that emo should be this and then everybody else seems like a clone from that image... it makes me sick.
I dont agree with labelling but i get labelled anyway which is something i cant change, but these emos have just created a label i dont ever want to be associated with... when people called me a mosher i didnt care too much, when people call me a goth or a punk i dnt care but some guy had the nerve to call me an emo kid the other day and i was like dont you fuckin dare! One im 20 in a matter of months im not a kid and 2 under no circumstances am i an emo!
>>By spookygoth (Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:01)
"the sheep generation" are you suggesting there's been a point in the history of humanity when being a mindless clone wasn't the accepted norm? When I say that the trend-following idea is nothing new, I mena that it's a VERY long-established tradition...
>>By Sk8a H8a (Thursday, 11 May 2006 01:20)
its all about conformity,if we are not conforming one way ,then its another way, unfortunately it is very hard not to conform in one way or another. 20 years ago people spat at me,laughed at me and got out the way quick cos they thought I was a punk, now no one bats an eyelid(which is more pleasant as i easnt going to change!)
>>By scarletnikki (Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:30)
everyone's a non-conformist on the inside. just 'cos people dress the same way it doesn't mean they think the same way, and i think we've established most emo kids are happy people, they have happy thought i'm sure, and unique thoughts, just like everyone else. but whatever you do you're conforming to something outside yourself, simply because it's impossible to personify yourself, it's impossible to show everything about yourself. there's just too much.
>>By Flagg (Friday, 12 May 2006 17:07)
Being philosophical about it doesn't make it less annoying
>>By Sk8a H8a (Friday, 12 May 2006 20:47)
if you look into a psychologists point of view on coformity, and all the studies that have been done you would be surprised at how far people will go to conform, and no matter what we like to think about ourselves we are all conforming in one way or another.
>>By scarletnikki (Saturday, 13 May 2006 15:54)
ye we studied conformity for psychology A level... they sat some people in a room with two people who knew it was a test and then they released smoke under the door and people thought it was a fire but because the two people who knew it was an experiment didnt move eveybody else stayed in the room too.... even though they thought there was a fire and they could have died..... its astonishing how people follow others like that. They in effect was have risked there arses just because they didnt want to be the only one getting up and leaving...
I think everybody does it in one way or another.... but emo does just make it annoying i have to agree there... theres something about the way emos do it that makes it incredibly irritating.... alot like chavs really they are irritating with it too. I think its because when everybody conforms they do it because they arent sure of how to behave or they think that what they want to to do would be looked down on by other people were as emos do it because they think being like every other emo is cool...
>>By spookygoth (Saturday, 13 May 2006 17:05)
I think people just conform coz they feel insecure about their external image and see safety in numbers... if they did it coz they thought it was cool it'd be fine but just conforming is surely a huge mistake, as that smoke test proves! I mean, surely someone would SAY something? In the case of the smoke, people are prepared to ignore it coz they don't believe danger can happen to them if it's not happening to anyone else who's doing the same thing but that just comes back to my point about voting for Nazis... if people choose to ignore the danger, they gotta live with it and teh foolish majority force it upon the minority who are not stupid enough to dress like an emo and vote for someone just coz everyone else is doing it
>>By Sk8a H8a (Saturday, 13 May 2006 19:38)
so many people don't know how to think for themselves and live their life as one big cliche, emo being a huge cliche!
