Discussion: Charlie Mingus

Mingus had a full appreciation of his roots. In his compositions, he made reference to everyone from Blind Lemon Jefferson to Charlie Parker, Ray Charles and Thelonius Monk. I find his writing wonderfully dense and witty. He even gets small groups, quartets and quintets, playing like full bands.

His sidemen liked his music too. There has been a group of them palying his compositions here in New York (at Fez) since shortly after his death. That's love!
