It makes sense because he's talking to this girl. "to me, coming from you friend [love] is a four letter word." So hes sayin that she only thinks of her boyfriends in romance an not as their friends. I think the four letter word IS "love" everytime she says shes his friend, he wants her to be saying she loves him. "i'm really only praying that the words you'll soon be saying might betray the way you feel about me" he wants her to betray their friendship, for love. and then "call me morbid or absurd" hes saying call me morbid, because Im obssesed with something thats clearly dead, and absurd, because hes crazy for thinking this way. After a long discussion, we decided that "Friend is a four letter word" is make a reference to the profanities (mostly four letters), and the expression "don't use any four letter words." (if you've heard it). "End is the only part..." is talking about ending something or other. I'm not sure if that's going to satisfy y'all, but if it does, who has any ideas about Mr. Mastadon Farm????? I've never really figured it out..but a "swatch" is a small piece of fabric. Very cool band. NEW CD IN JUNE!!! Gotta say, kinda disappointed. I only skimmed through the songs, though, so maybe I gotta give it more time. The best song I heard was "Dime." Other than that....eh. And I like both of them... They have a cool style of playing... >>By Grazyl Ok.. My theory on Friend Is a Four Letter Word. I think it has double meaning... one of them being what RegimeChange said. Four Letter word signifies that the word friend is a BAD word. Also when they say End is the only part of the word that I heard. The letter "I" in the word friend is silent. Therefore the actual four letter word being Iend but pronounced End. To me this song could have been talking about anyone. Anyone who does not diserve your friendship any longer for something they done. But if it was written to a girl (I wouldnt know if this is true or not) I could understand maybe the love theory. But this what I think. I've seen a lot of you asking for explanations of songs... And the one that I have some trouble with is Sheep Go To Heaven.
