Discussion: Big Wreck

absolutely LOVE this band....The Pleasure and the Greed is probably one of the most underated albums that have come out in a decade. The talent behind this band is amazing-Ian's voice and instrumental talent take my breath away. Never miss a local show. Hope to see them again REAL soon...until then anxiously awaiting any new releases......

I dig both albums and bought them as soon as I heard them. REally great stuff. I'm wondering though, if anyone has a playlist to their show in Roy Thomson Hall that they did with the orchestra. 'd really like to get my hands on a play list. If you have one, or know where I could get one please email me at AlvinBlah@cathloic.org. thanks a lot.

I think Big Wreck deserves way more credit than they're gettin'. I mean, these guys are the bomb. With Ian pumpin' out wicked songs and the awsome music to acompany them, I'd say Big Wreck is one of the best. They kinda remind me of underdogs of rock. Anyway, I really fuckin' hope they launch another "kick ass" album soon 'casue I really can't wait much longer until I'm listenin' to it. I also hope they keep their unique originality 'cause that's what gives 'em their edge over all the other standard, manufacture, "sing like you're constipated" rock bands that we have today!!!

I've been following big wreck since the release of their first album in loving memory of. I have to say these guys are not only extremely talented, but they put on one hell of a show.. I had the priviledge of seeing them for the first time in sarnia a couple years back after waiting what seemed like a lifetime.. They were better than i had hoped and i could have paid 200 bucks and not cared for the kind of show they put on.. They are definitely true entertainers and i can tell they have the passion to be where they are.. I think they deserve way more credit than they receive. The last time i saw them was here in london at the ceeps and it was only ian and dave, in a little bar with a little crowd of people, and after the show they hung out with everyone in the bar.. I thought that was extremely cool because it gave me the opportunity to get my autographs and meet the talented guys.. Ian's pretty tall ladies..not that i mind of course.lol.. "as i sift and drift through bullshit...that plagues from day to day...would you ever really notice...that i've gone away" The best rock band in the world!

I have a tradition of going into record stores all over the world and asking the shop keepers, "Point to the most adventurous interesting new stuff coming out from this region of the world." I discovered the French band FFF, and their insanely funky-hard-rockin' Blast Culture record this way (Free For Fever is also good from them). Here in the States I just ask, "What are you listening to that is cutting edge, that is perhaps not getting the attention it deserves." I've hit some good and bad things this way, as you can imagine. One day I asked a middle class late-twenty-something in polished shoes and a colorful necktie my favorite question. He thought for a minute and said "Well I bought this when it $8.99 and took it home. Didn't think it was really different when I first heard it, but then... about three weeks later it was the only thing I would play, and I would play it over and over and over." So I bought it for the much more punsihing $14.99, and took it home. When I first heard it I thought, "good solid modern rock." About three weeks later I WAS LISTENING TO IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER.... Absolutely one of, if not the, best hard rock band out there. I have been evangelizing Big Wreck to old rockers and new alt-grunge-rap-metal-head rockers ever since the first record. I thought I was going to die of thirst for a second album, and things (the scarce amount of stuff I could find) that I read seemed to indicate the band had folded. Thank "______" (fill in your blank) that they stayed together. I'm ready for record three.

Okay, now to some real discussion. I still like the first record better than the second. The second is more of a player's record where they prove how accomplished they are. It is also more consistently heavy. I just listened again to the first record yesterday and I love the way the band moves between driven metal riffs and ethereal vamps using chord pickings on electric guitar. I also think the melodies are better constructed on the first record. All that being said, the second record drives hard and sounds beautiful. No complaints - just commentary. No flames please.
