Discussion: Bela Bartok

I am keen on listening to Bartók. The violin concerto that was composed for Yehudi Menuhin is my favorite piece of art. The blend of folk music, and the very high level of modern music moves me.
For me this is the highest level of harmonic richness that can be achieved in music...

Twenty five years ago I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on this very concerto. It is a marvellous piece and perfectly constructed. Oddly enough, although I have not listened to it for many years, I was thinking about it a few days ago, and wondering why Bartok chose to write a 12-tone melody as the 2nd subject of the 1st movement. The work uses no serial techniques as far as I remember, perhaps it was merely a nod to Schoenberg et al.. What do you think?
