I have always been interested in the tradition of music. One problem that I have with tradition music however is its' crudeness considering modern expectations of performance. This means that usually I look for a crossbreeding of modern sensabilities(hippy), improvisation(swing/beat) and typically electrification. Music I most enjoy then would be groups that "electrified" the blues and made it faster and more given to soloing or electric bluegrass , British Isle Folk and even Classical or Eastern music. Some performers(and I usually like ensembles most) are capable of making the traditional music fresh without reliance upon electrification of their instruments. Examples of groups that managed to achieve this balance are The Baltimore Consort,Oregon,Shirley Collins,Shakti and Doc Watson. Examples of recent electric/effects types of performers I enjoy are Enigma,Dead Can Dance,Enya,Loreena McKennitt. Past performers I like include The Illusion,Sky,Renaissance,Fairport Convention,Strawbs,Pentangle,Steeleye Span,New Grass Revival,Mahavishnu Orchestra,Eleventh House,Blues Project,Paul Butterfield Blues Band,Dan Hicks & Hotlicks. Currently I am exploring various Medieval/Renaissance Consort groups(that employ original instruments..I say Instruments;am not particularly interested in accapella-voice only music) if anyone has any recommendations about other Consort groups besides the Baltimore Cosort(have some others coming from the library soon, but maybe I'm missing something)please feel free to clue in in.
