Arvo Pärt's quieter, more meditative music is the first contemporary classical music I actually got my father to like. A great succes for me, after trying for years to get dad anywhere beyond Shostakovitch (who's great in his own way, of course!).
After that there was Philip Glass as well, and even some softer John Cage piano works. I am proud of myself !

I find Pärt very easy to enjoy, if you want to sit down and let the flow come over you. His work has a quality to it that many people can relate to, exactly because it sounds so simplified and universal.

Yes, I agree Aywin. I also enjoy Tavener, but the meditative gregorian styling of Part has released me. All in my profile.

If you get the chance to listen to recordings the composer actually directed (if not conducted) by all means do. They stand out from the others like a barrel organ from a church organ. Deeper, quieter, more charged in every sense of the word.
