| Discussion: Alanis I've heard several people say that that song "Ironic" is not about irony and this is not true. I'm an English major so I've been forced to study lots of boring literary terms. Alanis's song uses a kind of irony known as "cosmic irony". It's defined as the "reversals of expectation", for example if an Olympic swimmer drowns in the bathtub or like her song when the guy flies for the first time and his plane crashes.
