Afi is a band who are well known for a distinct sound that seperates them from the normal punk shit that you have eating up the airwaves today. They are a band, that if you listen to them from album to album, has always tried to evolve but has always been true to themselves. They never sold out. Selling out is doing what is popular and what others want you to do. Just by the fact that afi pissed off some of their older fans proves that they didnt sell out because they did something that they might have guessed would piss some listeners off. And if thier starteing to get airplay, then why dont you get off of your little "i knew them first" high horse and be proud that one of your favorite bands is making it big. It means better quality recording and more afi for all! They were good with their old guitarist and bassist, and they are good with their new guitarist and bassist. Davey Havoc will always be one of my favoroite singers allt ime becuase he has a incrediblleeee voice and anyone with that kind of talent is wonderful. ANd for any of you who says Jade cant play, I would ask you to listen to dancing through sunday on sing the sorrow because thats an incerdible guitar solo. Ive tried tabbing it, and its impossible. AFI is great becuase evn though there style of msuic has gradually changed (i mean if you compare answer that and stay fashionable to sing the sorrow, the only thoing constant is daveys voice, and even thats changes some jsut becuase hes several years older now). and fo rthose all yall who say hes gay. ok. i dont know if hes gay. maybe he is. maybe hes not. so what if he is? so what if hes not? it has absolutely no effect on what incredible music this band puts out. I love the lyrics to silver and cold... >>By callme_8675309 ok, i'm a new afi fan and all i hear is that now they "suck". i bought the new cd (sing the sorrow) and that's the type of music that i like. yeah, i heard the leaving song part II on mtv first, but i really don' t think they're as mainstream as blink-182 or simple plan. They aren't even played on the radio here where i live and i barely ever see them on tv. I don't even listen to (and enjoy) most mainstream music. i really like afi because i think the lyrics kick ass, jade can really play well, as the rest of the band can, and davey havok's voice is so damn refreshing and new from all these other bands where everything sounds the same. Music is music. You like it, you don't. Music is supposed to bring people together, not turn them against each other! Why doesn't everyone who likes this band talk about what they like about them, instead of trying to figure out who is only trying to be "cool". Get over it. People who do that will get tired of it really fast. Anyway, it's their own problem if they don't know what they like, not yours. AFI is amaaaazing, and it's great that they're getting more exposure and getting well-known. Personnally, when I like a song, a band, whatever, I like to share it. AFI is putting music out there for listeners, wouldn't you think it's great that they're making a little more money that they DESERVE, and getting more fans? It's kind of hypocritical of me to be writing this and adding to this constant argument about "new fans" and all that crap, and then telling everyone to stop. But I felt I had to say something. Oh man, so much to say... Those of you who are constantly insulting and rejecting people who like AFI, aren't you tired of it? Why aren't you just grateful that there are more people that appreciate the same type of music you do? Common guys! Stop hating each other and just --- peace! And what's wrong with new fans anyway? To be able to listen to a band's music, we all had to discover it at one time or another, and there were always people who knew about it before you did. Sing The Sorrow's a great CD, Jade's an awesome guitarist, I don't know what else to say, and Davey's voice gives you goosebumps; it's penetrating. The friggin' girly girl type who keep saying "OMG i luv afi cuz um daveys hot ehehe." annoy me. Davey's attractive, yes, but when you're talking about AFI then what does the opinion that Davey is hot have to do with anything? Those are the ones who annoy me. Otherwise, new fans are fine because then there's just more people appreciating a great band. My school is divided basically into two main stereotypes... there're the skaters and then there's the people who listen to pop and rap. Then there're the normal people who don't try to fit into stupid stereotypes that don't matter... such as myself. Anyway, I've noticed that half of the people in the skater group were into pop and rap music until last year. I think it all started with that MTV Hellspawn Avril Lavigne... lots of people liked her and everything, but when people who had been listening to real punk music for a long time (or any other good music) came and expressed their dislike of her, some people thought, "Hey, I can agree with them and I'll be even cooler :D" and thus many of those people tried to learn about as many punk and rock bands as they could and abandoned their beloved Avril. But before Avril came along, the popular music to listen to was pop, and there was that boyband thing going on. So I just like to console myself by thinking, "MTV will just make another music genre popular soon enough, and the mainstreamers will be weeded out and move on to follow it again." Then we can go back to liking our good music in peace, without people running around trying to buy "punk" clothes because they think of it more as how you dress than anything else. Besides, labels are pretty dumb in themselves. Like I said, I just dislike these people who use MTV as their gospel because they're not liking the music, they're following a trend. It'd be much less stressful if labels didn't exist, but it's human nature to brand things like we do. I'm a relatively newer fan, I've only listening to them for just little over a year, but that doesn't mean I'm inferior to other fans. I think that Sing the Sorrow is definitely a masterpiece, but I also enjoyed Black Sails too. Sing the Sorrow was so great because it wasn't just music, it transcended what music was and supplied you with an ambience.
